Hello, how do I remove the Desktop Icons 'Ticks' on an HP Laptop running Win 10?

If you have your desktop synchronized with OneDrive then you would need to remove the desktop from OneDrive synchronization.
If that isn't the cause then try right clicking the desktop and Refresh.

@John Gray: as StuartR noted, the tick marks indicate that the files are synchronized with OneDrive. They are not shortcut overlay icons.
