Just tried *.mov and *.MTS and both played. A *.avi would not play. Not sure what else I could try.

Interesting. The very first one it lists is the *.avi and mine wouldn't play that.

Perhaps an age thing? Perhaps your TV predates this list.

Has your TVs software been updated to current status?

I believe it has. I have done it a few times. When I searched for a list of supported formats for my TV, like SturartR did, I came up with this Sony . It does not list *.avi files, so maybe Sony has just choosen to not support that and other formats.
