I have an old laptop with Windows 7 and was hoping the free Windows 10 download was still available

This article, by Ed Bott, is dated 'August 11, 2021' and describes how to get the free Win 7 to Win 10 update:

How about Win 8.0?

I had a laptop I acquired specifically to create a family video, but after the trip to share it, that laptop was set aside. Needs an overhaul now to get rid of the dreaded 8.0.

You'd have to install Windows 8.1 first; there is no direct path from 8.0 to 10.
Best wishes,
Hans

Thank you Hans.

I'll start there.

My experience is that 8.1 is usable as long as you avoid clicking on the Start button.

I’ve done this recently, last month. Clean install windows 10 and use my win7 keys.

It worked for me. No messy upgrade to 8.1.

I also upgraded the computer memory to at least 8 GB and HD to SSD knowing it is still compatible to Win10.

You may opt for this option just a thought.

You only need to upgrade to Win 8.1 if you are running Win 8.0. You can upgrade directly from Win 7 to Win 10.

I run Win 11 Pro on my main PC. It is fine. Not a big change. A few things to get used to.

I also run the current Insider Dev Channel Win 11 build in a VM on the same machine. Since Microsoft has decoupled the Dev Channel from the next release I decided to put it in a VM. I used to run the Dev Channel builds as my main OS. Never had a problem that was not self-induced.
