Difference between bar chart and histogram chart

First a remark about Excel: what many people call a bar chart, Excel calls a column chart. In Excel, a bar chart has horizontal bars, while a column chart has vertical bars.
Excel is not good at creating histogram charts in the traditional sense.
In a bar chart/column chart, the x-axis represents categorical data: brands of cereal, years, countries, ...
In a histogram, the x-axis represents numerical data grouped into ranges (bins), for example ages 0-9, 10-19, 20-39, 40-69 etc.
The bars of a bar chart/column chart usually don't touch each other (but Excel allows one to make them touch), and they all have the same width.
The bars of a histogram always touch each other, and they don't necessarily have the same width - it depends on the bin sizes.
