A Question about Smilies

Post by BobH »

Would it be possible to make the list of smilies searchable by their names?

I know nothing about how they are stored or cataloged or indexed. They all have a text value enclosed by colons. It is that text that I'm asking about being searchable.

I'm afraid that phpBB3 (the forum software that we use) does not offer this capability. Sorry!
Best wishes,

Thanks for the information - and the list, Stuart! Just thought I'd ask but figured it wasn't possible as I've never seen them searchable or even sorted by name on any forum.

Even more :thankyou: Stuart!

I am in the habit of typing my common smilies in place, faster than a click-click here and a click-click there. For example I will type <colon><coffee><colon> in the hopes of grabbing Skitterbug's attention.
I am a pest in two other Lounges that use this PHP software. They each have a different set of smilies.

Today without thinking I typed :coffee: into a post elsewhere and to my great delight :coffee: popped up even though it is not in their Smilies list. Two for the price of one!

If you can provide a simple guide to harvesting smilies, I will grab what I can and post them here; they may be of interest.
Cheers
Chris

I'm not sure that I can, especially as you would also need to check the copyright notice for each one before we could use them here.

Good point. Thank you Stuart.
(later). So, perhaps the string <colon>grin<colon> is copywrit for Eileen's Lounge, but on some other PHP board the string <colon>D will be copywrit?
Both strings produce a grin-smiley when at home, but not when they are visiting the other board

With so many smilies available in a variety of packages, I think it is quicker for me to continue using words with occasional support

The syntax <colon>grin<colon> is part of the PHPbb software, and many of the smilies are also a part of the standard software package.

The admins can upload gif files and turn them into additional smilies that are specific to the lounge, it is the graphic that would be subject to copyright, not the syntax for displaying it.

Thank you, Stuart.
56.gif
So this image, if promoted as a Smiley, would be a direct violation of copyright, even though it passed through a PNG stage (r/c, Image, SaveAs) and has been mangled by a most unprofessional guy in an attempt to disguise the GIF's source. The passage through the PNG stage to GIF is the equivalent to a translation through a text form of ASCII characters?

So, Stuart, Stretching your patience to the limit: When we join/enroll in Eileen's Lounge we probably clicked on the yeah-yeah-yeah button and agreed to all terms and conditions. In doing so we probably assumed the responsibility, shielding Eileen's Lounge, its Admins, their heirs etc etc from criminal action in displaying our personal images (Avatars, screenshots showing Windows problems, photos of foggy farm field and so on).
I have always thought that copyright rests with the person who took the photo.

If this is so, then the copyright for your GIF avatar would rest with whichever of your aquaintances squeezed the trigger on the camera, rather than with you - the subject of the photographic session, and the copyright of the screenshot remains with me, the complainer of Windows, and the foggy fields copyright is owned by "Stuck", and so on.
Eileen's Lounge would not own any of those member-contributed images, but would be shielded from prosecution by the "I Agree" clause implemented by each member of the Lounge.

In the example I showed above, and which Eileen's Lounge has now displayed for all the world to see, I can be sued for violation of copyright, but not by Eileen's Lounge, and not by Stuart, but by whomever Stuart engaged to trigger the shutter on the camera?

I get interested in this stuff whenever I read/hear about copyright. Mark Twain, for one, hounded the US and UK governments over extension of copyright. His Autobiography was written as a device to extend the copyright on each of his published works.

Cheers
Chris

I would never offer anyone advice on copyright law, but I am happy to draw your attention to Rule 13

13. Do not post pirated or illegal material
Do not use Eileen's Lounge to transmit copyrighted material in any way without the express permission of its owner. An exception is made for short extracts from copyrighted text where an acknowledgement and/or link is given.

Thank you even more, Stuart. Every time someone mentions the rules, I promise myself that I will re-read them every six months on principle.
In a self-help arena it is easy to think that the rules say "Be nice", and then to extend that to "I am being nice by bringing something useful to my friends".

On top of that a Smiley is such a visibly small thing, and not at all an essential part of communication. And on top of that, not even the size of the Mona Lisa.

Cheers

That's true! I would have missed it on my self-guided one-day tour of The Louvre if I hadn't paused to wonder why three grillion people were blocking my view of that part of the wall.

I think that possibly the only thing that that image would violate is people's eyesight. What on earth is it?
And what would it be promoted to - Major General?
