Re: Ring of Fire
Thanks. Sadly, it will not be spectacular here - the Moon will only take a small bite out of the Sun...
Best wishes,
Hans

Re: Ring of Fire
By using binoculars to project the sun onto a white piece of paper on the floor I managed to get a glimpse of the bite out of the sun at around 11:00, i.e. just before it reached its maximum where I am.
I didn't try to photograph it though. Mainly because I was hand holding the binoculars so the image was not exactly stationary but also the cloud cover was rapidly increasing so it kept fading in and out. By the time it got to its maximum the cloud cover was more or less complete. It still is as I type at about 11:40 UK time.

Re: Ring of Fire
Before Covid-19, people from north-western Europe used to travel to the south in great numbers to spend so much time in the sun that they took on the colour of boiled lobsters...
Best wishes,

Re: Ring of Fire
Thanks for the heads-up Leif. I shall try to watch it tomorrow, when the rain has swept away.
Cheers

I don't see that being a problem. You can get everything on a catch up service these days.

Re: Ring of Fire
At 11:10, it was cloudy, so no sign of any partial eclipse.
An hour later it was bright and sunny, with clear skies.

Re: Ring of Fire
There is some trickery going on here and I intend to expose it.
First off, the YouTube videos show the eclipse exactly as I saw it back in 1974 in Perth WA. Someone is trying to fool us by presenting old videos as News.
Second: I am inclined to beleif every thing he says, and he said 11:00 where he lives (somewhere in Europe), which is almost lunch time; time for elevenses at any rate, but this =https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-1KYs4 ... news clip has the scientist (!) saying 0m19s that it had already started before sunrise which, that part of the world, is around 5:35 a.m. Everyone knows that Toronto is about six hours behind the important parts of Europe, so how can they see something before it happens in Europe?
Third, the same scientist is claiming to predict the weather some three years in advance (1m30s) in Newfoundland. I have lived here long enough to know that that can't be done on a daily basis. Yesterday was supposed to be 20c, but as people rolled up to collect their apple trees, we were all shivering; it was more like 3c. This scientist in saying that the eclipse "will be visible in Newfoundland" is essentially telling us that we will have thick cloud, torrential rain etc etc.
I'm not stupid, you know.
Fourth: at the 1m43s mark this "scientist" concedes that he has never been in a total solar eclipse. Well, I have, 1977 near Mount Gambier in South Australia, and I am more inclined to believe me than a non-expert who has managed to snag a TV interview based on a few theoretical papers, each of which, I am sure, ends with "More research money is needed here".
I was so dismayed at the inaccuracy of the report that I spent the rest of the afternoon watching replays of The Royal Rumble on WWE. Now those are Real Men with Real World Experience, and they have traveled all over the USA ...
Cheers
Chris

At my age, "recycled" comics are just as funny the second (fourth?) time around as I don't recall the last time I saw them.stuck wrote: ↑11 Jun 2021, 07:37...
