Agreed.
I think that the fiction provided us with a very good gap-filler while we waited.
The Clarke/Kubrick pair scored pretty well, some of their failed predictions notwithstanding.

I was struck by the similarity (equal quality?) of the images, but on reflection (nice one Chris!) it's pretty easy to make jet-black look like jet-black, right?
