Screen numbering in MS Teams doesn't match Win 10 display numbering

Post by stuck »

My working-at-home set up is a laptop connected via a docking station to two external monitors, i.e. I've got three displays in total.

Windows identifies these three displays from right to left, as 1 (the laptop), 2 and 3.

However, when I'm in MS Teams and I use the 'share screen' feature then:
- The option called Screen #1 corresponds to the laptop, i.e. to what Windows calls display 1
but
- The option for Screen #2 corresponds what Windows calls display 3
and
- The option for Screen #3 corresponds what Windows calls display 2

If I hadn't used MS software for years I might be surprised that an MS application and MS Windows use different names for the same thing

For me, the 'fix' will be to plug monitor 2 into the port on the dock that's currently got 3 attached to it and vice versa. Windows will then think the monitors are, right to left, 1, 3, 2 but Teams will number them 1, 2, 3, which is more intuitive when you're sitting in front of them.

Such fun

PS I discovered this 'feature' the other day when I relocated my home office to a different room (long story why I did that)
