Windows 10 Home Version 2004 slow performance
My laptop updated itself to Windows 10 Home Version 2004 last night. I have a few issues that I would appreciate some help with. I will create separate threads for each issue, to avoid confusion.
My laptop is running very slowly
At first I thought this was because Windows Defender decided to use a lot of CPU after the upgrade, but this only lasted for an hour or so.
I now have very poor performance for almost everything. Typing text into notepad, dragging windows around the screen. Typing into this FireFox window. Absolutely everything.
CPU utilization is low, so is network, memory, and disk. GPU utilization is quite high, I have no idea why.
This is a very powerful laptop, and was working well until the upgrade.
DELL XPS15 9570. 32GB memory. Core i7-8750H. PM981 NVMe Samsung 1TB SSD.

That's strange - shouldn't the NVidia graphics card disable the built-in Intel graphics?
Best wishes,

I can't find anything recent on the web, but one of thes may give you an idea or two:

Re: Windows 10 Home Version 2004 slow performance
I have improved this one by following the instructions in
https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/win ... dd4ec1a5cc
After resetting the NVIDIA 3D global settings, the GPU usage is more normal, and I can type, drag windows etc. much more easily. Other things still seem slow, but I will monitor for a while to see if this is just subjective.

Re: Windows 10 Home Version 2004 slow performance
Could the slowness be because Windows is reindexing stuff?
Not that this will help but, back in the days of XP, whenever there was a.NET update my PC would be sluggish for a couple of days and then return to normal. No idea why. I put it down to Windows being irritated that the new furniture that had been delivered was in the wrong place so it was taking longer getting around the house but once it had rearranged stuff / got used to the new layout all was well again.

Re: Windows 10 Home Version 2004 slow performance
I am pretty sure that the slow performance corresponds to times when the GPU is 100% utilized. I thought it might have improved a bit, but the problem is still there.

The process that makes the most use of the GPU is "Desktop Window Manager", followed by Zoom Meetings (I am on a work call all day)

Isn't this latest chart showing that you're still only using the on-board Intel graphics and your whizzy whiz NVIDEA one is idle?

Re: Windows 10 Home Version 2004 slow performance
Yes Ken. I can try making the superfast power-hungry heat-generating GPU the default. Good idea.

Re: Windows 10 Home Version 2004 slow performance
That was only a little bit of help. The NVIDIA GPU now has 1% to 5% utilization, which is better than 0%. The Intel GPU still peaks at 100%, but for shorter peaks, and spends longer at lower levels. Clearly some things will only use the slower GPU.

Can you disable the Intel GPU in Device Manager > Display Adapters?

Re: Windows 10 Home Version 2004 slow performance
I have been reading various web threads, and it seems that the laptop panel, AND the external display connector, are physically connected to the Intel GPU. Even when the NVIDIA GPU is used the Intel one acts as a passthrough for the graphics. This may be causing Windows task manager to mis-identify which GPU is in use!

Grasping at straws now - do you have the latest NVidia driver? (See Download Drivers)

Re: Windows 10 Home Version 2004 slow performance
I use the DELL Update tool to keep the drivers up-to-date. It seems to do a pretty good job.
Since I switched the default GPU and rebooted it seems to have finally settled down to acceptable performance. Not sure if this is coincidence or a real change yet.

Re: Windows 10 Home Version 2004 slow performance
10 minutes later it was back to 100% GPU utilisation and terrible performance
I downloaded the NVIDIA driver from the DELL web site and reinstalled, with the option that resets all user customizations. That didn't help. I am now in the process of downloading the Intel graphics driver to reinstall it...

Do you have Dell SupportAssist or Dell Command Update installed? Those two should pick up any driver updates necessary.

Re: Windows 10 Home Version 2004 slow performance
I have now reinstalled both graphics drivers. I checked GPU utilization soon after restarting the laptop, before I ran any applications except task manager. GPU utilization was near 100% for quite some time. Heaviest user was "Antimalware Service Executable" I then started FireFox with about 12 tabs and now found "Desktop Window Manager" using quite a lot of GPU as well.
Maybe I will revert to last week's backup and avoid this version of Windows 10

Yes, I regularly run both. They don't show any updates available today.

Re: Windows 10 Home Version 2004 slow performance
I just closed FireFox and opened exactly the same 14 tabs in Chrome. The system seems a bit faster, and the GPU load seems a lot lower. I will run it like this for a few days before deciding whether to restore Sunday's backup.
