Delete Registry Keys/Flags

Post by bknight »

I'm deleting OneNote from my lap.
So I navigate to fine OneNote in the registry and hit the delete key find next delete etc.
Well after an hour I'm still deleting out of one "directory", so I Googled a batch routine and found.
reg delete HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft...\wpnidm\… "several hundred" directories /v onenote /f
Received an error that the value could not be found.
What would the code to delete ALL from the registry?

Why are you worried about it? Did you uninstall it?

@JoeP: Yes, bknight mentioned "I'm deleting OneNote from my lap."

@bknight: unused registry entries take up very little space, and they don't do any harm.
Best wishes,
Hans

@HansV: I saw that but he said "deleting" not uninstalling. Deleting to me is something different.

This video does not specifically talk about OneNote, but it does talk about how to fully de install a few things in Windows 10. It mentions and shows how to find some things “hidden” in a few places. A quick view of that video might give you some ideas of where to look. At one point he shows how to look in the registry in two different places for the same thing.
As I recall , they were something like Current user and Local machine
He also shows bits of things in various start up and task scheduler places.
He was at one point , particular looking at trying to de install thoroughly OneDrive. I don’t know if OneNote might be handled in a similar way. Maybe a quick look at the video would not hurt

Thanks for the link. I did the first video and deleted OneDrive also, we'll see if the other actions Chris suggested speed up anything. I haven't tried the second as of yet, but wanted to let you hear from me.

I have not got around to trying those things yet myself. I intend to. I am new to Windows 10. But I have done a lot of reading up recently, and Chris’s stuff and ideas seems quite popular.

In previous versions of the Lounge we have seen some discussions about registry cleaning, going as far back as to the Win9X/NT era (at times depending on loungers present  it was a sure way to get a heated discussion; another topic would be all things related to page file, discussions could go on; a slightly older Lounge might now respond with "meh".)

I see no reason to remove (or delete) registry entries unless there is a problem *installing* software, or perhaps in some rare cases to increase security (sometimes while waiting on an update).

As for OneNote, some year ago or so Microsoft removed Windows Journal from their operating systems, OneNote was previously part of Office but is now integrated in Windows 10, and it has same features and more; I have never heard of anyone removing Windows Journal from Windows before MSFT decided to stop support, so why remove OneNote.

So far, I only know what I have read.. I have read people who are of the opinion that OneDrive is a potential source that can aid viruses, especially if you register an account with Microsoft during instillation of Windows 10.
I have not yet heard much about OneNote, but OneNote does appear in the typical “Debloat-Windows-10” list of things that people think might be useful to remove because most people never need them, ( but it is listed as "Microsoft.Office.OneNote" ? ).
I don’t know anything else other than that yet about it.

I have been using OneNote for many years. My main use is with doing genealogy research and I do not use it with OneDrive.
There is no connection to OneDrive in any manner on any of my systems.

I also use OneNote to save "Scraps" of data fro different discussion boards and other websites.
It is a very useful tool.

I see no need in the removal of OneNote. One may also fined that the next half year upgrade will add it back in.

Can you provide some links to these “Debloat-Windows-10” that show this?

I have not yet myself “done a de Bloat” – those videos and the home page of the video author Chris Titus are probably the best source to check for up to date info...
My geuss is that these are current or previous stuff associated with the de-bloat coding..
https://github.com/Sycnex/Windows10Debl ... loater.ps1" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
https://github.com/W4RH4WK/Debloat-Wind ... t-apps.ps1" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

You will find "Microsoft.Office.OneNote" listed somewhere there..
Don’t ask me anything about the stuff. As I said, I have not got around myself to doing any de-bloating. I will. Might have to be next winter…

I have often read that or similar. It is often therefore recommended to de-bloat , every 6-12 months, if you are into de bloating..

( Getting rid of OneNote and Onedrive are, I think, quite different things. I am not too well clued up, but I think , OneNote is just one of several apps often suggested on a de-bloat list. I think OneDrive is something much more significant and is a more major task to remove, -… its all discussed in the videos
I think you can customise the de bloating stuff a bit, so as to not take out any stuff you do want )

I'm not on Windows 10 yet, so my comment may be irrelevant.

That said, and for what it's worth: I've used OneNote quite a bit in the past. I found it very useful for organizing information, and— so far as I was able to tell— not at all bloat-worthy.

But as with all things Microsoft—stuff changes. My disclaimer.
