Global File Search Software

Post by BobH »

I hope my subject line is not misleading.

What I'm looking for is an app like Everything that will scan all my mounted disk drives and return files according to the usual search delimiters but will also display very large icons. File Explorer or Windows Explorer (or whatever it's called now) does a great job for a chosen directory in giving icons and other file details but lacks an effective global search function, IMO. Everything does a great job at selecting files from available sources but does a poor job at displaying images and other data in a format that the user can manipulate, unless there are things I need to learn about using Everything.

I was wondering if anyone knew of such an app.

 :chocciebar: :thankyou:

Hi Bob,

Before I make other possible suggestions, can I inquire what you mean when you say, "but does a poor job at displaying images and other data in a format that the user can manipulate"

As you can see with the screenshot, Everything can show images in various sizes (and has a preview window too). Regarding the "manipulation" part, it has a full right click menu that provides all the contextual commands (that Explorer does) to edit and control the file(s) you select. The column headers provide sorting and rearranging too.

Can you clarify what you want by manipulate?

I have not found the magic incantation that allows me to use Everything to give me images like you display in your post. As I said, the problem might very well be my limited knowledge of how to use Everything.

I've never succeeded in getting anything other than the info depicted above to display. Can you tell me the menu options you follow to get your results? My version is 1.3.4.686 X86. Should I be using a different one?

When I click on the View menu option, I do not get the same display that you do.

Thanks for the help, Rudi!

Hi Bob,

It is probably additions to the later versions.
My screenshot is from the version: 1.4.0.713b, but according to Voidtools, there is even a later version now... 1.4.1.809b

I'm going to upgrade myself now to on the latest beta version. (I've never had issues with the beta versions before, so I'm confident it will operate well).

Once you have updated your copy, you should have the ability to view the image thumbnails and a preview pane.

Edit:
I just noticed the list of changes on the site link above, to confirm the addition of thumbnails and preview...

...and it does batch file renaming. (Though not as powerful as dedicated file renamers)

Thank you, Rudi!

I have the new version now and can see thumbnails like I wanted. This seems to be everything I need.

When I searched for a newer version than the one I was running, I did not come across any 1.4.x.xxx version. Without your link, I would have still been looking for my answer.

Glad I could assist.
I'm glad you asked about it as the new updates (re. searching inside file content esp.) is an excellent addition and something I can already use.

I use it dozens of times a day. I have a good filing system but its so much quicker to press a shortcut key to open Everything, type the first few letters of the file name I need and locate it (and open it) all within seconds.

Nice one guys! I'd never have found the new (and much enhanced) version either.
I notice too that it includes some of very handy search filter "kinds" like offered in Windows Explorer: audio, video, picture etc.

Yes, me too. Still on v1.2 which dates back to 2009, I guess.

I tend to stick to pieces of software that work just as expected before they get bloated, but maybe I should give a whirl to Everything's latest version.

Maybe this rates a spot on the Beta Software area?

The others are welcome to disagree and move it, but I'm good with it being here in this forum. Even though most of the thread refers to the beta upgrade, its been around since 30 September 2015, (starting with version 1.4.0.702b, and slowly progressing to where it is now.) In my opinion, its tried and tested and proven itself and I'm not really sure why it still is listed as "beta" status anymore.

As soon as this was to be move to BETA, it will be Released To Manufacturing (RTM).
Then it would need to be moved back here!

Impressive is an understatement. After installing, it took less than a mere minute to scan all my drives, 4 internals and 2 externals to establish the base. Invoking a search provided results in a split second.

I need to take a breather after that experience.

 and :thankyou: for the reference.

Bob

Sorry :sorry:, I should have said put a reference to this thread (here) in the Beta Software forum; just to distribute the "good news" more widely.

I'm not so sure the new version is for me because it exposes my time travelling capabilities as far forward as 2098!!
