Wow! That's about the last thing I would have expected. :flee:

Also I wouldn't have thought one toaster cycle would be enough time.

Let us know how it turns out.

Chris, are you certain those beans are not already roasted?

Hi Cellmate.

I gave these one toaster cycle, a pause of two minutes, then another sixty seconds of toaster.
At that point I took them out to cool on the window-ledge.
The "crack"ing had started, but I suspect only the first crack.
As predicted, the beans are roasted unevenly, I should stir them more frequently.
Ground, they tasted allright, but reminiscent of the roasted pumpkin seeds we used as eratz coffee forty years ago.
I suspect I need to roast them some more, so I will try something like one minute roasting, two minutes paused, repeated three or four times.
The chaff had begun to separate.

Bottom line: twenty pounds of green coffee beans will keep me in coffee for quite some time!

Cheers
Chris

Absolutely.
I had a small fire in this toaster oven four years ago. It is an old model, but ferociously hot!
As you will note in my reply to cellmate, I had no fire this time!
Cheers

When roasting coffee beans, the beans need to be tumbled all the time the heat is being applied.
Also the toaster oven is set at a way to high of temperature, and that is why you got the flames.

Looks like it's going well :clapping:

I was also going to remind you (as the post above) you need to keep them beans moving for even roasting.

Well, my little toaster oven is rotated once every twenty-four hours, automatically. I guess that's not fast enough ...

I am inclined to agree.
I will retry using bursts of heat - say, roast for ten seconds, shake-n-stir, roast for ten etc.

FWIW I ground another batch of those roasted beans this morning, and used TWO heaped teaspoons in a mug of coffee. That made something closer to a regular coffee-shop taste.
Maybe I've not been using enough grounds ... :coffeetime:

Hi Cellmate.
Yes. Going well is correct.
This idea of using my toaster oven was merely to see if i could roast at all, and then grind and brew.
I didn't want to blow $10 on a second-hand popping corn oven, or $250+tx on a brand new kitchen roaster before I knew that the beans would actually roast..

So far only one side-effect - I had to have a molar extracted the day after I first roasted.
It's difficult to blame a fully-infected tooth on home-roasted coffee beans, but I'll give it a try ...
