Roasting coffe beans

Post by ChrisGreaves »

I have been given 20+ pounds of green COFFE beans, about fifteen different varieties in, of course, fifteen different plastic bags.

I could buy a coffee roaster ($230+tx)
I could roast them in my oven (smoke, need to rake them over every ten minutes)
I could take them to a store and pay to get them roasted
I can not throw them out. No way am I going to consign 20lb of green beans to the vermicomposter.

I would like to hear from Loungers who are now, or have in the past, successfully roasted green beans.(*)
I figure that roasting in small quantities is the way to go, to get the freshest taste.
I use about a one-pound jam jar of ground coffee each week.

Thanks for any expert tips

Chris :coffeetime:

(*)I am using the lexical atoms "are now" and "have" etc in the sense of a rewarded activity rather than an essential state of being.
I in no way meant to imply, infer, or insinuate that some Loungers were has-beens.

"Loungers who are now (...) roasted green beans".

I fear that such loungers are not in a position to reply... :innocent:
Best wishes,

Directions

1.Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C).
2.Pat green beans dry with paper towels if necessary; spread onto a jellyroll pan. Drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle with salt and pepper. ...
3.Roast in the preheated oven until beans are slightly shriveled and have brown spots, 20 to 25 minutes.

Well Hans, I don't know what to say. According to Home roasting coffee - Wikipedia - "Most persons of distinction in Holland roast their own berries."

What a coincidence!
1722 is about the time i am setting out my second mug of lapsang.
Of course, we are way behind Europe, here in Toronto ...

Well, Earl Grey, It is probably due to my lack of ice-cream, a condition I hope to remedy well before 1722 today.

We have an old fashioned kind of stovetop popcorn popper the we have used for coffee beans and for popcorn.

Look in your local thrift shops or get one for about $25 US from Amazon.

You can always do small batches in a cast iron skillet. Dry pan (no oil!) and keep 'em moving.

They have to be watched closely and kept moving...

They do have an "aroma" while roasting that some do not like, so, roaster beware.

Interesting that you say that as NOTHING smells nicer than a freshly roasted and blended brew of coffee.

I lived near a place where coffee was roasted on an industrial scale in my youth. The smell was nowhere as nice as that of freshly ground (already roasted) coffee!
Best wishes,
Hans

Thanks, cellmate.
I had a session yesterday, using my little toaster oven.
I placed a half-cup of beans on the little metal tray, slid it in, and pressed the lever. The toaster is on for about two minutes per lever-press.

During the first two minutes I heard the first "cracking" sounds, and shook the tray once.
After that first two minutes I took a look and thought that they would be well served by another two minutes of roasting.

That was a mistake.

After ten seconds the beans burst into flames.
My second mistake lay in NOT remembering what I did last time something caught fire, and so I opened the toaster oven.
Smoke everywhere.
Windows open throughout my apartment to vent the smoke ... so now I have a woollen sweater which I donned to counteract the cold, which sweater must now be washed to be ridden of the smoke ...

sigh.

I'll try again this afternoon with just one two-minute session, two shakes, and then I'll grind-and-taste.

Cheers
Chris
