how to view an SVG graphic file?

Post by ChrisGreaves »

So I borrowed a coat-of-arms image from a web site, and it came down (in a web page I think) as "Coat_of_Arms_of_Australia2.svg" and 934KB.

Windows Photo-Viewer won't deal with it, and leaving aside the question of why someone would use an esoteric fprmat instead of JPG or PNG, I trotted off to find out how to view it.

http://extension.nirsoft.net/svg suggested making use of dear old rundll, so I tried that:-

but nothing exciting happened.

Question1: Is Rundll32 supposed to be a general-purpose Marvin that deals with esoteric stuff?

Question2: What Windows program might be expected to open this type of file (I understand that I can d/l special-purpose SVG viewers, but a client may no agree to that_.

TIA
Chris

All browsers should be able to open a .svg file.
Best wishes,
Hans

How did you grab it?
Could you not right click the image and "save image as..."

I agree, Hans, and Firefox does.
But suppose you had an SVG file that you wanted to manage somehow - edit or just view in some sort of viewer.
MSPaint refuses. Windows Photo Viewer refuses.
I guess that there aren't many people nowadays that don't have a browser on the system.

It just struck me as peculiar that the format is readable (so far) only by "third-party" applications (OK, I guess IE isn't 3rd-party ...)

More info about the .svg than you would like to know: Scalable Vector Graphics.
Best wishes,

Hi Rudi.
I grabbed it by saving a web page, from an Australian web site, probably Federal Government.
Being a Proud Australian (is there any other sort!) I thought it would make me a nice wallpaper(1) so I first tried r/c to save the image.
No go!
Then I issued a File,saveAs from Firefox.
That succeeded.
When I returned home I went into the web page folder and copied the image to a folder, deleted the web page, and thought to go to work.

That's when I found Icouldn't MSPaint, VSOImageResizer, or WindowsPhotoViewer it!

Cheers
Chris

Hans, you're right as usual (grin)
I shall study the page in detail at home (assuming the saved web page is readable).
A quick glance suggests that the reason MSPaint et al. won't view it is because it is not an image file in that sense.
It is a text file (XML)

Hmmmph!

If in doubt (about the save process or if there is no option), just do a screen print (screen grab) and save to the flash drive.

Rudi

As noted, a .svg file can be viewed in any browser, but to edit it, you need specialized software. SVG-Edit is a free open source editor, available in the browser and as a download.
Best wishes,
Hans

Inkscape is another :free: SVG editor.
The FAQ might be of some help too.
