maximized window from shortcut on desktop

Post by ChrisGreaves »

Untitled.jpg
I have this day installed the DuckDuckGo browser; accepted all default settings (I'm smarter than I was in the past!) and it works.
Installation placed a shortcut on my desktop, so I right-clicked and pinned that to the taskbar.
Clicking the task bar icon brings up the browser but in an intermediate-sized window.
Double-clicking the title bar maximizes the window. OK.

I r/c the shortcut on the desktop, choose Properties, and select "Maximized" as shown in the image above.
Close the properties, execute the shortcut and once again receive an Intermediate window.

I've tried this three times now.

I always work in Maximized windows; my eyes/brain are faster than my fingers, hands, wrists etc.

My understanding of "Properties, Maximized" is that it is a Windows-action rather than related to to the specific application, but I suppose that DuckDuckGo browser could choose to ignore a maximize-request from Windows.
On the other hand double-clicking tio title bar maximizes this browser.

Any suggestions?
Thanks, Chris

What happens when you open from the desktop? Sometimes, apps opened from the taskbar seem to ignore shortcut properties.

Hi Joe.
This is all happening from the desktop shortcut.
I tested the desktop shortcut as soon as DuckDuckGo Browser was installed and didn't worry about the window size.
I then r/c assign to taskbar, and used the taskbar to load DDG.
I noticed that the window was NOT maximized and abandoned the taskbar icon.
I went back to the desktop shortcut and r/c Properties Maximize to see if that was all that was needed.
Nope!
I have not been back to the taskbar icon since.
I am loading exclusively through that desktop shortcut, andf each time it opens up in an Intermediate window.

Question Based on this experience, do you think I am correct in assigning blame to Windows? (rather than DDG browser)
Thanks, Chrus

Not necessarily. Apps can ignore those settings. I tried it with the Brave browser and it worked just fine from the desktop but not the taskbar. I normally use Edge and run it full screen. Windows remembers the last size and that is what I get when I re-open Edge from anywhere.

Thanks for these notes, Joe.
I went off and did a cursory search of comments about the DuckDuckGo browser and came across some disguntled users.
I have uninstalled it for now ...

... although even the uninstall was tricky. RevoUninstaller (2.4.2 free ?) did not show the DDG browser, nor did the Win11 Control Panel. I tracked it down via Settings, Apps.
Thanks again, Chris

That suggests the app was packaged as an MSIX, not an MSI/exe, and the reason it will have been done like that is because MSIX provides a sandboxing capability, which isolates the app from the underlying operating system.
