Win 11 24H2 doesn't support Intel 8th & 9th gen CPUs

I'm a bit disappointed, MS have dropped support for some CPUs that prior to 24H2 were Win 11 compatible. This means a perfectly good Win 10 laptop, more than capable enough for basic / light use, will become a door stop once Win 10 reaches end of life:

My only alternative seems to be to find a copy of Win 11 23H2 and install that, which will extend the life of the machine until it reaches end-of-life in 2026. Doable but a bit of a pain.

So I guess there is no hope for my 1^st generation Core i7 920 then, regardless of its capabilities. I hesitate to upgrade as I am seriously considering switching to the Apple ecosystem. I find I am using the iPad/iPhone more and more every day. I'm using the iPad to respond to this thread.

No hope at all, but there never was for a 1st gen chip. Win 11's min was always 8th gen - until the arrival of 24H2.

The support removal is for building new PCs. It is primarily targeting OEMs. Existing PCs are still supported.

That's not my experience with this Win 10 laptop. From what I've read, 8th and 9th gen Intel CPUs are no longer Win 11 compatible because those chips do not, cannot, support SSE4.2.

My DELL laptop was offered 24H2 this week. The installation ran for a long time and then reported that it was backing out again. The error code suggests that it was an incompatible driver. I retried with my docking station discunnected, and my VPN shut down. This time it failed much more quickly and now it no longer offers that update.

There are specific hardware requirements for Windows 11. From what I have found 8th and 9th gen Intel CPUs DO support SSE4.2. There several ways to find out if a specific processor supports SSE4.2. You can use utilities such as Hwinfo or Cpu-z. Also, see this article - Microsoft is not dropping support.

This laptop is less than 18 months old. It has a 13th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-13700H 2.40 GHz
64.0 GB RAM
System disk is an SSD with 532GB free of 683GB

The update failed with error code 0xc1900101

1) why are there no 8th & 9th gen CPUs listed on the page I link to in my OP, which is an official MS page, unlike the article to which you link?
2) why will the 8th gen CPU laptop that I have not update to 24H2?

Yes, I've used the PC Health Check App, it doesn't help. The laptop will not update.

See the second paragraph in the article you linked. It is directed to OEMs building new machines. Also, see the 7th paragraph at Windows processor requirements. This is the parent document to the first document you linked. It says "Changes to the processors listed do not indicate or impact a customer’s existing Windows support and are intended for OEMs to determine processors which may be used in new Windows devices."

Regarding the inability to upgrade to 24H2:
1.) Does PC Health Check say the device is eligible?
2.) What is the error code from the update?

I might, but not now. This device was a main machine but it's now only a spare. For what it will get used for from here on it can stay on Win 10.

Having clicked on the Win 11 Installation Assistant link and then clicked on the device specs link and then on the compatible CPU link I again end up at the list of CPUs in my OP, which does not include 8th gen CPUs.
