Win11 24h2 and Bitlocker

Post by Rebel »

Everything that I've read states that Microsoft is enabling Bitlocker automatically when upgrading to Windows 11 ver. 24h2 for all except Windows 11 Home.
A few days ago, 24h2 was installed on my five year old Lenovo laptop running Windows Home - and sure enough, no automatic Bitlocker.
Yesterday, my 3 year old Lenovo laptop with Windows 11 Pro was upgraded to 24h2, and once again, Bitlocker was not automatically enabled.
Some articles state that only with new clean installs of 24h2 will Bitlocker be enabled, and others state that Bitlocker will be enabled on updates as well.
Does anyone here know which version is correct?

My just over one year old Lenovo laptop updated to Win 11 Pro 24H2 on 4 Jan 2025. Bitlocker was not enabled, i.e, my experience of the 23H2 to 24H4 uptdate on a Win 11 Pro machine is the same a yours.

That's only a sample of two so hardly statistically significant so draw your own conclusion

Thanks for the response Ken. In any event, I'm quite happy that Bitlocker was not enabled. From reading some of the Bitlocker do's and don'ts, making sure that you have recorded (and where you have recorded) the encryption key and the encryption key recovery password are of paramount importance. Otherwise, even MS won't be able to help. Goodbye computer and data.

See Bitlocker by default. Only on clean install on reinstall not on an upgrade.

Thanks Joe. There is confusion over this issue, and it is curious why Microsoft has failed to issue any official clarification.
