Power settings in Control Panel wrt "Fast Startup"
Just curious, is all.
Attached is a screenshot from Control Panel.
I do not fully understand "Fast Startup" after two or more years.
But mainly I do not understand why selecting "sleep: on all six options should prevent me from setting Fast Startup to ON.
I think "Suppose that Fast Startup is really good for when I Shut Down or Restart. I'd like to default to Fast Startup from now on. Indeed, a response to this post may encourage me to do that!
I can see that "Sleep" and "Fast Startup" might be incompatible options, but if that is the case, then why inhibit the switch setting for "Fast Startup" when I have - temporarily - selected "Sleep" for my work today?
Thanks, Chris

I've always understood that turning off fast start up was one of the first things to do on both Win 10 and Win 11. It beginning deemed more trouble than it's worth.

I also think fast startup is more trouble than the few seconds it might save

I agree with Ken and StuartR. I immediately disable Fast Startup on all my Windows devices.
Best wishes,

I can't even find "Fast Startup" on this Windows 11 23H2 computer. I guess Microsoft might have noticed that it was a bad idea.

@Stuck @Stuart @Ken @Hans.
OK, but I am still curious:
(1) I will take your joint words for it that it is a Bad Thing, but, please and thank you, what is/are your justification(s) for that/those statements?
(2) Why was it "deemed more trouble than it's worth." and/or "more trouble than the few seconds it might save"?
(3) What form did the trouble take? BSOD, disk corruption? Bloat? ...
When I learned about it ten? years ago, it was around the time that "shutdown" was somehow more like the old "restart", and "restart" now was more like something else.
@Ron I'm asking for an Australian friend in Norway.
Thanks to all, Chris

Re: Power settings in Control Panel wrt "Fast Startup"
I can't remember what it was that first led me to turn off fast startup (it was years ago**) but it was a genuine problem that went away when I disabled fast startup. Having turned it off I didn't even notice a slow down in startup. Subsequently I've just done it as a matter of course.
If you search The Lounge I think you'll find that turning off fast startup has been suggested as a fix, and works as a fix, on several occasions.

Indeed you have it, Chris.

Control Panel > Power Options > Choose what the power buttons do > look under Shutdown settings.

Re: Power settings in Control Panel wrt "Fast Startup"
Introduced with Windows 8 in 2016,
Might as well get rid of hibernate and use shutdown instead.
Risks of using Fast Startup: Systems that do not have hibernation mode will also not support Fast Startup although this doesn't seem like a RISK to me!
Cheers, Chris

Re: Power settings in Control Panel wrt "Fast Startup"
OK, I found it, but I'm still leaving it turned off. The trouble with fast startup is that when you reboot it keeps things loaded in memory, so if you are trying a reboot to clear a problem then it often doesn't work.

When Fast Startup was enabled on my PC, Reliability Monitor listed at least one crash each time I turned the PC off then on.

Re: Power settings in Control Panel wrt "Fast Startup"
I didn't time it when I turned it off, but I can't say I noticed a slow down in the boot time when I disabled fast startup. Had such an option been available in the days of Win 98 (or maybe even XP) it might have been noticeable, but nowadays? I doubt it. My ancient 3rd gen i5 with only 8 GB RAM PC boots from its SSD in well under a minute and my much higher spec. Win 11 laptop bots in about 10-15 secs.

Re: Power settings in Control Panel wrt "Fast Startup"
Fast startup does not affect a restart. It speeds up the reboot after a shutdown by saving the system state and restoring from the hibernation file rather than going through the boot up POST process and loading the drivers from scratch.
It is one of the first things I turn off also. Through the years I've inadvertently left it on and had strange things happen after a shutdown and reboot. Turning off fast startup magically cleaned up the issue whatever it was.
