Processor not supported for Windows 11 upgrade

Post by jmt356 »

According to PC Health Check, I cannot upgrade to Windows 11 for the following reasons:

TPM 2.0 must be supported and enabled on this PC.
TPM: TPM not detected

The processor isn't currently supported for Windows 11.
Processor: Intel Core i5-6300U CPU @ 2.40 GHz

According to https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/win ... 74389a7ba3, the processor must be "1 Ghz or faster with 2 or more cores and appearing on our list of approved CPUs." My processor is 2.40 GHz. According to PC Health Check, it has 2 processor cores. However, it is not on the list of supported processors at https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windo ... processors.

I find the inclusion of supported processors to be arbitrary. Intel Core i5-6300U, which is an advanced 6th generation processor, is not included, but Intel Core i5-1235U, which I believe is first generation, is included.

It is upsetting that Microsoft is effectively causing all of us who do not have processors that appear on its seemingly arbitrary list to retire our perfectly good laptops or risk major security vulnerabilities if we continue to use our laptops after Windows retires support for Windows 10. There are millions of perfectly good laptops currently running Windows 10 that users will be forced to recycle, and that is a massive waste.

I have another laptop running on Core i7-5600U 2.60GHz, which I understand is also a very fast processor. That does not appear on MS's list. It will be forced to retire as well.

JMT

It is irritating, but there is nothing you can do about it if you don't want to ditch Windows altogether. Microsoft requires CPUs to support TPM 2.0 for Windows 11, to provide enhanced security (TPM = Trusted Platform Module). As you have found, several not-so-old Intel CPUs don't support it...
Best wishes,
Hans

The Intel Core i5-1235U is a 12th generation Intel processor. The TPM which your processor lacks is a hardware chip.
Trusted Platform Module (TPM, also known as ISO/IEC 11889) is an international standard for a secure cryptoprocessor, a dedicated microcontroller designed to secure hardware through integrated cryptographic keys. The term can also refer to a chip conforming to the standard.

According to Intel, that processor has TPM2.0. It may have been disabled by the PC vendor. You need to go into the BIOS to be sure and enable it if possible.

You may install Windows 11 on unsupported PCs at YOUR OWN RISK. See How to install Windows 11 on an unsupported PC.

Even if it my Intel Core i5-6300U CPU @ 2.40 GHz has TPM 2.0 and I go into BIOS to enable it, the Core i5-6300U still does not appear no the list published at https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windo ... processors and so I still don't think the issue will be solved. As far as I can tell, the only Intel Core processors that are supported by Windows 11 start with the 8th generation, with Intel® Core™ i5-8200Y being the first i5 on the list. My Core i5-6300U is 6th generation, I believe.

Hi,
I am not qualified to comment on the specific technical details discussed here as I don’t understand them. But I can say my second/third best computer currently is an old Vista Acer Aspire that I bought for about 50 Euros 18 months ago on ebay. It came with windows 11 on it, and so far I have used it a lot and never had any problems. The Seller was very helpful to me on other things, and I mentioned in passing once that I was surprised that such an old machine was seemingly happy on windows 11. He said he just followed various instructions he had from Microsoft themselves on how to get windows 11 up and running on an apparently unsupported machine.
I don’t understand too well computer CPU specifications, but here is the details of my win 11 machine:

This makes no sense.

Your laptop runs on an Intel Core 2 duo 2 GHz T6400. That processor does not support Windows 11. It is not found on the list of processors published here: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windo ... processors. So I don't see how it is possible it is running Windows 11.

My laptop runs an Intel Core i5-6300U 2.4Ghz, which has a CPU benchmark of 3,241, but is not supported for Windows 11.

The Aspire 7730G runs an Intel Core 2 duo 2 GHz T6400, which has a CPU benchmark of 711 (much lower than my processor, which is not supported). So I would naturally expect that the Intel Core 2 duo 2 GHz T6400 would not be supported.

Agreed but as JoeP pointed out it is possible to run Win 11 on unsupported hardware:

Well it wouldn't , would it. It's Microsoft.
(I like looking at my Windows 11 machine, it has a strange appealing huey blue that I can't quite explain, I see a sort of gay purple in it. I have become attracted to it in a scary way. He's beautiful.)

I linked one article on installing Windows 11 on unsupported PCs. If you do a search on "how to install Windows 11 on unsupported CPUs" you will get many articles explaining how to do this.

I have another computer with an Intel Core i7-5600U CPU @ 2.60 GHz. According to PC Health Check, I cannot upgrade to Windows 11 for the following reasons:

TPM 2.0 must be supported and enabled on this PC.
More about enabling TPM 2.0
TPM: TPM 1.2

The processor isn't currently supported for Windows 11.
More about supported CPUs
Processor: Intel Core i7-5600U CPU @ 2.60 GHz

Is it possible to turn on TPM 2.0 in BIOS on this chip?

According to https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/win ... 74389a7ba3, the processor must be "1 Ghz or faster with 2 or more cores and appearing on our list of approved CPUs." My processor is 2.40 GHz.
According to https://cpu.userbenchmark.com/SpeedTest ... 0Broadwell, my process has 2 processor cores. However, it is not on the list of supported processors at https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windo ... processors.

I therefore do not understand why Windows states, “The processor isn't currently supported for Windows 11.” I think the only issue that should be reported is that TPU 2.0 is either not supported or not turned on.

JoeP, did you find an Intel article that states that the Intel Core i5-6300U CPU @ 2.40 GHz has TPM 2.0? If so, can you link the article?

Does the Intel Core i7-5600U CPU @ 2.60 GHz also support TPM 2.0?

It is very difficult to find a definitive list from Intel. Also, if you search around you can find discussions of adding a TPM chip to certain motherboards. I'd say check your BIOS to see if TPM is available.
