When did it become legal to store a file with no Name, only an Extent?

And don't try to tell me that a period character is valid in a file name (as in Christopher.Paul.Reynolds.Greaves) because in my screen shot, the sole period must be the delimiter between "Name" and "Extent"

I suspect Windows has always allowed that. It have deleted the filename by accident quite a few times.
You cannot delete both the filename before the dot and the extension after it, for "." has a special meaning - it stands for the current folder.
