Cannot "See" Thumb Drives

Post by BobH »

If this turns out to be a duplicate post, my apologies. The post I thought I'd made on this subject seems to have disappeared.

I have a USB hub attached to the laptop. There are 3 dongles that seem to be working but the 5 thumb drives plugged into it have disappeared from the system.
Here's a ss of Windows Explorer (note the D: drive is plugged into a USB port on the laptop) . . .

And here's a ss from Device Manager showing the USB devices . . .

Until recently the drives appeared in Window Explorer but no longer. There are no individual power switches on the hub as there are on some. I've unplugged them and moved them around thinking they might be discovered as new devices. No such luck.

What should I do to troubleshoot this? I don't have another USB hub at the moment.

Still confused in central Texas.

Have you tried plugging the hub into a different USB port?

This is an HP laptop. The unknown device is something to do with HP. I'm investigating but I think it has something to do with WIndows 10, possibly with update 2004 which has not yet been applied to this OS.

I think there is a 'law' covering this.

After spending several hours running HP diagnostics, I shifted the hub around and moved the power cable to a different outlet only to discover that the USB cable had come lose in the laptop port. All is well in thumb drive land now.

83% of the time, it's the cable.

And 17 % of the time it's the wireless.

Right On!
I always suspected that Gord Campbell's sample size was way too small and at "six problems" he got bored.

At the time (1990) he told me this we were trying to persuade a Compaq Portable to dial out, and after almost an hour of fiddling we came up with Greaves's Corollary:-
"The rest of the time it's the other end of the cable"

So, is it Campbell's law?
