Windows 10 Home Version 2004 slow performance

It is now just as slow using Chrome as it was when I used FireFox. I've logged a support call with DELL, and I will almost certainly restore last Sunday's image backup of the system partition when I get some time.

I have now restored the backup and I am happily running Windows 10 Home version 1909 again.

I still see nearly 100% GPU utilization immediately after I reboot. This is mostly down to Antiimalware Service Executable. However, it has dropped to about 10% to 20% about five minutes after it finishes startup.

I wonder what was causing the persistently high GPU usage. I have a Dell XPS13 laptop, updated to Windows 10 Home 2004 three weeks ago. It too shows a lot of activity after starting up/rebooting, but normal behaviour after that.

Performance has been back to normal for the past three days, so I am very confident that it was something to do with the Version 2004 update.

Any suggestions for what I can investigate to enable a future update to 2004 to run smoothly? I tried logging a call with DELL, but they just advised me to run hardware diagnostics, and revert back to the previous windows version.

Issue with older drivers for Nvidia display adapters (GPU) mentions that older NVidia drivers are incompatible with Windows 10 version 2004. "The affected drivers are any version lower than 358.00." (I have version 446.14)

My NVIDIA driver uses a very different numbering system...

That's the one from Dell. I always install the driver from NVidia itself. I can't decide for you whether it's worth the trouble trying it.

It's certainly worth a try. I can always reinstall the DELL driver if necessary, or revert to a working image backup!

I will let it remain stable for a day or two and then try the Windows 2004 update again.

If you search the web for the drivers for your GeForce 1050 Ti driver you will will get this result. Showing that the driver version is 375.63 which is acceptable to the Win10 2004 update.

The version for my GeForce GTX 560 card is version 391.35 but shows ...

... when looking at version via the Device Manager

And, I do not have an answer as to why the driver version number in Device Manager displays a number different from the web site.

Edited to add: The last 5 digits shown in the Device Manager version number reflects the version found on the web site ... in my case, 391.35. Yours is version 442.70.

Further to my previous reply... I had noticed that when I searched for the driver for your GTX 1050 Ti, that driver 375.63 was also compatible to my GTX 560. Yet my driver is showing as 391.35. I then went back to the NVidia/GeForce driver site and searched for mine which showed it to be 391.35. Yet#2 ... your GTX 1050 is included in that list.

Again, no logical answer for the variance. Perhaps you just stay with your current driver and see what happens?

On my PC, the context menu of the desktop has an item 'NVIDIA Control Panel'.
Selecting Help > System Information shows the five-digit version number, and the Components tab the longer version number:

Thank you Hans, I see exactly the same now, even down to the version number. I will try the Windows 2004 update again tomorrow or Friday.

I am now running Windows 10 Version 2004 with no further performance issues.

I had to uninstall the Intel Optane Pinning software to prevent another error, but since I don't have Optane memory this was no great issue.

Just to close the loop, I emailed DELL, and received the following reply

Thank you for your reply and glad to know that you were able to upgrade to windows 10 version 2004 after updating the Nvidia drivers from the vendor website.

We wish to confirm that the product team will have the driver tested and then will get it released in future.
