I usually set the folder view in Windows Explorer to "List", but I frequently find that it has changed to "Details". I can change it back to list again on an individual folder, but the option to apply this view to all folders then appears to be disabled.
Any thoughts or suggestions?
Sometimes I can then open Windows Explorer again, usually at a different folder, and the option is available again."Apply to Folders" greyed out

Could you have tried it in a Libraries folder? "Apply to Folders" isn't available there.
Best wishes,
Hans

Does Apply Folder View to All Folders of Same Type in Windows 10 | Windows 10 Tutorials shed any light?
If you have This PC or a library open, Apply to Folders will be grayed out

OK but I don't know of any local tea rooms that do chocolate teapots.StuartR wrote:Next time I'm in Yorkshire we should go out for tea somewhere

Re: "Apply to Folders" greyed out
This just happened to me again. A folder had changed to Details view. I set it to List view and then found that the option to apply to all folders was greyed out.
A little experimentation shows that if I navigate to this folder via a library link then I can't apply the setting to all folders. If I navigate to the exact same folder using a normal link then everything works as I want.
That is strange.

See the replies by me and Leif higher up. This is a known "feature".

Re: "Apply to Folders" greyed out
I thought you meant that it applied to the Library folder. This was a folder nested much lower down the hierarchy. And it's even more odd that I could make the change I wanted by navigating to the same folder via a disk drive path.

Re: "Apply to Folders" greyed out
I've noticed since a long time (at least since Windows 7 came) that my setup of folder views (just some minor changes) wasn't "carried over" when accessed via the library route; i.e. if comparing access via Computer on the Start menu (or Winkey+E) with the default link to Explorer on the Taskbar.
