Windows 10 version 1809 released

Post by HansV »

Microsoft has released the October 2018 update for Windows 10, aka Windows 10 version 1809.

If your hardware meets the requirements, it will be rolled out automatically over the next weeks, or you can look for updates in Start > Settings > Update & Security.
Best wishes,
Hans

It is generally better to wait for the upgrade to be offered. Microsoft rolls these out in waves, analyzes the results, makes adjustments to the installer, issues patches, gets driver updates from OEMs, and then repeats the process with the next wave. If you are not offered it immediately your hardware may not be ready. If you insist on forcing the upgrade be sure to have an image backup of your system before starting the process.

An image backup is good idea before an major upgrade.

I agree that most users should wait until the update is offered.

I decided to bite the bullet yesterday. The total time for the update, including download and installation, was 1 hour and 40 minutes on both the desktop and laptop. The time that I couldn't use my computers was a lot shorter than with previous updates: just 10 minutes.
Best wishes,
Hans

Yes, the upgrade installation experience has been dramatically improved to reduce the time the PC is unavailable. Of course, since much of the installation is done in the background how much you use the PC during the install process will affect the time. I've experienced up to 3 hours on some builds when I've been using the PC.

I can't wait, Oh Boy!
On second thought yes, I CAN wait. Is it something like the disastrous update to 1803? :flee: :flee:

I took the plunge and it isn't that bad. Edge does not work (Hmmmm.....) while IE is fine. I tried a PowerShell command to reset and reinstall Edge however the Edge browser is still a challenge.

@John

Edge works for me. I'm using it most of the time. What does not work for you?

JoeP,

The Edge browser does not connect to the Internet yet Internet Explorer does. OneDrive access does not work. I have been on the telephone with MS Support and remote desktop assistance does not work either. MS Support is aware of various challenges with the latest build and are working on fixes.

Long story short...I'm rolling back to a previous build. Life was much simpler yesterday afternoon. I should have dipped my toe in before taking the plunge. :hairout:

Edited:
I just rolled back...took 5 minutes.
Regards,
John

Could be a challenging update if this is correct:

For sure I am not Checking for Updates just now.

As JoeP mentioned, most users should wait until Microsoft offers the update to them, instead of actively looking for the update.

(Both my desktop and my laptop updated without any glitches, though)
Best wishes,
Hans

Agreed. Last time I experienced some issues for going early. It got sorted though so full marks to MSoft.

My laptop is ready to reboot to complete the automatic installation, but I have deferred it till Saturday night when I can afford to risk losing it for a while.

That's a wise decision, but one wonders how the file-deletion bug could have slipped through. Lots of users had been testing the Insider versions...

Yes Hans a very strange set of circumstances.
Perhaps it relates to the 'differences' between those with W7 to W10 upgrades, clean installs, linked docs etc to the cloud or simply due to the desire of some users to try to make W10 operate the way they want.

I guess we will never know but I for one do not upload to the cloud, preferring to keep ext HD copies locally.

Several place have referred to the fact that the hard drive was getting full and had border line amount of space to install the update.

I have gotten the update installed and as far as I can tell, have not lost any files.

One article that I read (and I can't remember where) indicated that deleted files were not in fact gone, but simply marked for deletion. The article suggested that Recuva should be downloaded, installed and run immediately (before any of the "deleted" files might be damaged or overwritten). :crossfingers:

@DaveA: even if there is only marginally enough space for the update, it is not acceptable that Windows should mark files for deletion instead of issuing a warning and breaking off the update.

@Rebel: it'd be best to download the portable version of Recuva to a USB stick, and run it from there. That way one doesn't mess with the system disk.
Best wishes,
Hans
