Windows Update Fails: KB4338819

I am encountering an update challenge with the latest Cumulative Update for Windows 10. I have tried a Microsoft recommendation but always end up with the same failed outcome. One additional thing that I tried was deleting the files in "C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download".

You can try the following:
- Click the Start button or press the Windows key.
- Type disk cleanup
- Right-click Disk Cleanup and select 'Run as administrator' from the context menu.
- Select the system disk (if necessary) and click OK.
- Tick the check box for 'Windows Update Cleanup', and also, if present, 'Windows Setup temporary files' and 'Temporary Windows installation files'.
- Click OK.
- Wait until disk cleanup has finished. This might take a while.
- Restart Windows.
- Try Windows Update again.

I'm still encountering the same challenge and error message.

You were right in saying that the disk cleanup will take a while...about an hour.

Hans - In reviewing the update history I see that the update was successful on 7/10 yet for some reason on 7/11 it is trying to update again.

I'd leave it alone for the moment. Sometimes these problems resolve themselves after a while.

Did you download and install the servicing stack update?
Did you go through all the steps?

Have you tried a clean boot before installing the patch?
Have you tried SFC /SCANNOW?

Yes to all your questions. The 1803 patch seems to be temperamental.

An interesting find is when I tried to uninstall the update I didn't see it listed as installed yet the screenshot above says it was installed on 7/10.

Is it possible to uninstall updates from a particular day with Powershell? I know that it can be done one at a time but I'd like to automate the process. There is one update KB4343669 that will not uninstall. When I select it, the "uninstall" option does not appear.

I found a post regarding the problematic update. It didn't resolve my challenge but at least others are posting the same challenge.

I reverted the VM to an earlier state and started the upgrade process once again. Low and behold everything upgraded as expected.

I'm chalking this one up to smoke and mirrors. Thank you Mr. Microsoft.

I was able to resolve the challenge with the KB update in the original environment. I downloaded from Microsoft the Windows 10 ISO Version 1803 and did a reinstall of the operating system; keeping files and programs.

Something in the operating systems must have been corrupted and the reinstall repaired it. One thing to note is that the reinstall performs a windows update as part of the install process.
