NET TIME - "The service has not been started"

Post by StuartR »

I use the DOS command
NET TIME \\computer.domain /SET /YES
to keep the clock on my laptop synchronized with another PC in the house.

I am now getting the error
The service has not been started
whenever I issue this command.

I checked the Windows Time service and it is set to manual start, so I started it, but this made no difference.

Can anyone guess what service it is complaining about?

I found a suggestion in the rather long thread Time Server on Windows 2008 R2 that it might be the netlogon service.

And perhaps How to Synchronize Clock with an Internet Time Server in Windows 10 may help, even if it is about syncing to an internet server.
Best wishes,
Hans

Was the time service on "computer.domain" started?

Problem solved, in a bizarre way

The command works fine if I just specify \\computername - I just needed to remove the domain part of the name. I swear it used to need the fully qualified name.
