New Wi Fi network

Post by silverback »

Sorry for the dumb question but I just can't drive Windows 10; can't even find Help!

We have a laptop which (somehow) is connected to my home wifi router.
My wife has to take the laptop to another location tomorrow and needs to use an internet connection.
How does one go about getting the laptop connected to the new wifi source, please?

Thanks

Most laptops have a Wi-Fi slider; make sure it is in the "on" position.
Select Start > Settings.
Select Network & Internet.
Select Wi-Fi.
You should see a list of available Wi-Fi networks. Those protected by a password will have a little shield in their icon.
Select the network you want to connect to.
Click Connect.
Best wishes,
Hans

By the way, your provider (TalkTalk) has blocked the e-mail notification of my reply...

Thanks for the help with WiFi.
TalkTalk has just had a major revamp of its mail system - check the TalkTalk forums! - so it's obviously been over zealous on the spam filters.
I can't see how to add anything to a white list at the moment, but for when I do sort it out, what email address will lounge notifications be coming from, please?

Thanks

Strange. I received your email notification saying the first one had been bounced and your second email saying what the address was - but have not received your first (obviously, because it was bounced)
As I said, TalkTalk has been 'upgrading' its mail system recently.

There's optimism, we are talking about TalkTalk here, which for the benefit of non-UK readers, is not held in high regard by many UK residents, myself included.

Grump over, as you were...

Thanks for the info; I was only aware of Talk Talk as a 1980's band...

Take for example one aspect of this 'upgrade' to their email system. In the previous incarnation your list of contacts appeared in a narrow column on the right hand side of the screen. Want to create a message to a contact? Double click the name.

Now though 'contacts' is a single link on the left. You must first click on that link to get to the list of names. OK so it's only one extra click but that is not an upgrade in my far from humble opinion.

Ken
PS I'm not a TalkTalk subscriber but I do provide 'tech support' to a family member who is on TalkTalk. I'm expecting the phone to ring very soon...

Ah, and here I was, thinking we were the only nation on earth with a brain-dead ISP. Whenever they "upgrade" something, what they actually do is breaking a perfectly working process.
Cheers, Claude.

Thanks for the help, Hans and Rudi. In the end, SWMBO fired up the laptop and it connected to the new wi-fi automatically, so good result in the end.
Didn't realise my dumb question was going to unleash all this TalkTalk hostility. I thought it was only me (and the hundreds on the forum, of course) that were grumpy.
