Download Windows 10 on your schedule, not Microsoft's.

Post by Rudi »

Jump the line and get Windows 10 right now. Don't want to wait for Microsoft to push the update to your PC? Here's how to download the new OS immediately.
Although it appears to be focused on creating installation media (e.g., a DVD or flash drive), you can use it for in-place upgrades -- no external media required.
Run the tool, then choose "Upgrade this PC." From there it's just a matter of waiting while Windows 10 downloads, verifies and installs -- with the inevitable reboot or two along the way.

Go here for the download...

Rudi

That could be useful, thank you. I still think I'll wait a few weeks for other people to iron out the initial issues.

Don't lie to me, mate.
Tell me it ain't true? Win10 is going to be forced upon me?
I spent the best part of a week trying to disengage Win8 and its weird >1TB file system from this <1TB drive from this laptop a couple of years ago.
If MS tries to force Win10 on me I'll seriously consider switching to an Apple, after all these years (32?)
(If anyone at MS is listening: There's an air-conditioned Apple Store not ten minutes stroll from where i live ...)

You won't be forced to upgrade to Windows 10, Chris.

Rudi's suggestion is intended for users who have reserved the upgrade to Windows 10. Microsoft is rolling out Windows 10 to those in phases - it might take several days or weeks. For those who can't wait, there's the option to start the upgrade manually, using the link in Rudi's post.
Best wishes,
Hans

Thanks, Hans.
I'm heading home now and will spend the weekend thinking of a good retort to shut the door on Rudi's earlier comment.

I did the USB-update-now thing a couple of evenings ago and things seem (knock on wood) to be doing well. I did have an issue with a couple of AMD drivers but that was it.

Make sure that you review the privacy options as mentioned in Windows 10 privacy. Microsoft's attitude now is "All your data are belong to us"...

A friend shared this article that contains tips on retaining as much privacy as possible in Windows 10 during the install.

I haven't installed it yet although I did receive the official notification that it's ready. I'm reserving the weekend to do that in case I run into trouble.

Hans,

Thanks for posting the link to page 1.

I'll post back after I upgrade to Win 10 this weekend with my experience.

I've downloaded and installed Win10 on a desktop and a laptop so far with no problems--except getting it to recognize my router. But once I got that going, it was fine, (so far).

I upgraded to Windows 10 without incident this morning. One thing I discovered is that I had to turn a few of the privacy settings back on to use Cortana. Cortana appears to be nothing more than a Bing search. I'll probably turn the settings back off now that I've played around with Cortana.

One other thing I found was that to pin a web link to the Start menu, I had to create the shortcut in Edge and then pin it to the Start menu. Every time I open it, it opens in Edge. I'd like it to open in Chrome (my default browser) but I haven't figured out how to do that yet.

Other than the above, I would say it was a "thumbs up" experience.
