The update gets to "Installing... 100%" and then quits with the message that "an update did not install...", and the update history shows error 0x80073701. That's apparently a catchall error for "something interfered, but we can't tell you what it was".
I've attempted installing again after each of these supposed remedies found online:
- Restart or cold boot. (Repeated after each attempt)
- Run the Windows update troubleshooter, several times. The first time it found a missing registry entry. Didn't help.
- Reset the Windows update cache.
- Run DISM /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth followed by sfc /scannow
- Download the update package from the Microsoft catalog and run manually.
I'm particularly puzzled by the difference between the two VMs. The one that updated successfully includes Office 2019, while the failed one runs only LibreOffice; otherwise they should be identical. The failed laptop has Microsoft 365 Family and a bunch of other stuff.
I'd appreciate any suggestions for progress!
