OK. I understand that Android is bad as long as I am paranoid about Google; iPhones are out because of Apple. What's left?
Are you trying to send me back to a flip phone so as to not clutter up Eileen;s Lounge with my questions?

Have I understood this thread so far?
Google can be seen as evil, but it is doing something about ferreting out malicious aps?

To me this sounds a bit like the MS story: develop a swinging MSWord with a macro language, and spend the rest of your marketing budget trying to hold back the ravaging hordes of nasty people who have learned to program in Word Basic?

Get an Alexa Dot. If you watch woot.com daily you can sometimes find them for less than $20US.
But, but, how am I going to fit this in my short pocket when I'm walking/bicycling to the grocery store?
Cheers, Chris

And sell your soul to Amazon...
... who I hate with a passion.I hold Amazon guilty of closing every second-hand bookshop I've ever visited, and a great many of the new-stock stores, too.
And removing the nice sales clerks I got to talk to ...

Who's next on the list. AskWoody is fear-mongering; I got that.

What about this Eileen's Lounge thing? Any good? I'm not a drinker, so I'd probably not be welcome in a place called "Eileen's Lounge".

You thought I was too paranoid twenty-four hours ago ...

I was being facetious, of course. When you get a smartphone, whether it's Android or iPhone, you have to accept that you'll be part of its infrastructure. Both Google and Apple try to ensure that the apps on their official store are free of malware, so it's better to install apps from there than from a third-party source. Yo still have to be cautious, of course.
Best wishes,
Hans

Hans, I apologize; in my (then) current frame of mind I was in shock-mode (sort of).
I had been somewhat reluctant to buy a smart phone back in 2016 and master this new sort of device; after all, I was retired, had no internet access at home, ...
Buying a third phone last November seemed like overkill, so the prospect of replacing my new phone with yet-another=new-phone so soon after pension day sent me into a spin.

So let's see if I have learned the lesson here:-
When buying a smartphone, buy only a model whose manufacturer supports a brand-name-ap-store.

Google: operates Google Play Store
Apple: operates App Store
Samsung: operates ...

I suppose too that some ap producers make their Ap compatible with more than one manufacturer, so that one ap might appear in two or more stores.

Cheers, Chris

As far as I know, all smart phones support a brand-name-app-store:
* If you buy an Apple product, it's the App Store.
* If it's not an Apple product it will be a device that uses Google's Android OS, regardless of who (Samsung, Motorola, etc.) actually manufactured the device. Such devices have the Google Play Store.

Some apps are available for both Apple's iOS and Google's Android OS. Some are only available for iOS not Android, and vice versa.

OK; let me have another shot:
If I am downloading an ap for my smartphone, any smartphone, I should obtain the ap from either Google Play Store or Apples App Store?

Yes - if you have an Android phone (Google, Samsung, Motorola, Xiaomi, ...), install apps from the Google Play Store. And if you have an iPhone (exclusively Apple), install apps from Apple's App Store.
Best wishes,
Hans

Sort of, the Apple App Store is exclusively for apps for Apple devices. You can't download stuff from there onto an Android based device.

Likewise, apps in the Google Play Store can't be installed on an Appple device.

Samsung phones also have a "Galaxy store" which should be safe for downloading Samsung specific apps.

Except there have always been third party stores that provide Android apps and, thanks to the EU DMA, Apple has lost its monopoly on being the sole source for Apple apps.
