My 12 B!asic ingredients

Post by ChrisGreaves »

Assume you have clean running tap-water.
Assume you must feed yourself for a week by cooking from a set of TWELVE basic of ingredients. Which ingredients would you pick (or which of mine would you replace) and why?
ApplesBuy a three- or four-pound bag of apples at the supermarket. Because they are bagged they won’t have those annoying adhesive labels stuck on to each apple. Buy a different brand next time, until you find a brand that you enjoy eating raw when you head off first thing in the morning for your newspaper.
CarrotsBuy a two- or three-pound bag of carrots. Choose a bag with more small carrots, rather than a bag with only half a dozen monsters. You can munch a raw carrot those days when you don’t feel like munching an apple when you head off first thing in the morning for your newspaper.
CheeseBuy a 450 gram slab of common cheddar or mozzarella cheese from the supermarket. You can get fancier (a.k.a. “more expensive”) stuff next time.
ChickenBuy a pack of five or six boneless chicken breasts. The chicken breasts are huge, much too big for me. I cut mine into thirds and wrap them in waxed paper yielding fifteen or eighteen servings. Into the freezer with them.
EggsBuy a carton of a dozen (or nowadays eighteen) regular eggs.
FlourBuy a two kilogram sack of general purpose white flour
MilkI hate lugging water home when I can get it by turning on a tap, so I buy a large sack of powdered milk. Things have changed since last your mother struggled with powdered milk in the mid-fifties. If you enjoy lugging water home, buy a 3-pack of milk – you get three transparent plastic bags of milk in a bigger bag; you can re-use those smaller strong plastic bags for years for storing soups and leftovers, packing sandwiches and so on.
OilBuy a one- or two-litre bottle of cooking oil. Vegetable oil seems OK, at least while you get started.
OnionsBuy a three- or four-pound bag of yellow onions.
PotatoesBuy three or four of those dark-brown skin baking potatoes. You don’t have to eat an entire potato at one sitting!
RiceGet a small bag (five hundred grams?) of long-grained rice. White. Brown. Doesn’t matter today. Just buy some plain rice. Fancy rice you can buy next week.
TeaBuy a small carton of tea bags, good quality. You deserve a cup of tea and a sit-down after you have cooked a meal. If you are a glutton for sleepless nights, buy coffee instead of tea. But buy one or the other so that you can reward yourself for making it through the night to the start of another day, and for making it through another day to the restful time of evening.

Is vasic more fundamental than basic?

"Vasic":
  • "A bag of minimalist design with a touch of classic sensibility that fits every woman and every scene. Vasic is "the standard handbag" to be carried anytime"
  • is a Serbian surname, Cyrillic script: Васић
  • means"vase-like", being a vertical glass container filled with water, used to display cut flowers
Take your pick!

Ah...TX John.

I assume Chris meant that these ingredients would be found in his standard handbag and carried around everywhere and at all times. That makes sense...like a survival kit of sorts.

Rudi

6. Cheese
7. Chicken
8. Mince meat
9. Potatoes
10. Coffee
11. Chocolates
12. Chips/Crisps (in the packet for snacks)

Chris,

That's a surprisingly UNHEALTHY list!

Here's mine:
Lettuce, romaine not iceberg
Spinach, fresh
Kale medley (contains some carrot slivers)
Mushrooms, sliced
Eggs, preferrably from free-range, antibiotic free chickens
English muffins
Protein powder, bulk, preferable chocolate flavored
Silk (soy milk)
Avocado
Bananas
Cheese, preferably hot, or sharp

Breakfast: protein powder, Silk, water, 1/4 avocado and banana blended into a smoothie

Lunch: Spinach and mushrooms are steam cooked together. Combine with the eggs into a small crock and microwave to create a delicious sandwich-sized "burger". Serve on an English muffin, perhaps with a small amount of Hot Pepper Peach Preserves to add a tangy sweetness.

Dinner: Large salad of romaine, kale, spinach, cheeses, mushrooms and using yellow or brown mustard as dressing (0 cal, 0 fat)

Yeow!! PJ. That seems like you've just returned from a doctors visit!
If I'm faithful in my daily exercise, I would want to spoil myself with s choccie or something similar.

I was going to complain that neither the Canadian nor South African list contained any green, leafy vegetables and too many carbohydrates; but PJ beat me to it. His list suits my palate better than the other 2 and is a bit healthier.

And the last two items Stuart? If I can guess:

11. Cheese (How in the world can you make a wonderful cucumber, tomato and lettuce sandwich without cheese!! )
12. Chocolate (That list has zero sugar in it!! From whence doth your energy cometh from?)

Good to hear you're off your diet now, enjoy the 2 kg of flour et al. I for one have always admired HansV's ability to think clearly, and, no offence, but quite frankly, he's suggestion was the only valid one IMHO.
Cheers, Claude.

If you had 12 Rudi, I think you would definitely need whisky...

Lets redefine the list:
Wherever whisky appears on the list, any items after it become irrelevant!

Some of us drink whisky in moderation, Rudi, and can still remember what we were trying to do when we get past that point on the list.
