Wireless Security options

Post by John Gray »

Since my six-year-old router has died, I needed to buy a new one.

Its wireless security offers the following WPA2 options:
  • WPA2
  • WPA/WPA2-PSK
each with the choice of AES or TKIP as the security algorithm.

Which should I choose for maximum security?

(An aside: I wish router manufacturers would use identical security terminology!)

The first one (WPA2) is the most secure.
The second one will allow connections from devices that can do WPA, but will use WPA2 with devices that support it.

Thanks, Stuart. How about the added AES or TKIP? I have a feeling I should prefer the former.

AES is more secure. TKIP is used for backwards compatibility with some older equipment
