Network Access

Post by Ted Myers »

Hello, I have two Asus Laptops, different models. My images were taken with both powered ON including my WDTV Live Player.
My first image is my older Asus. About 6 months old.

This is my new one. About 5 weeks old.

I have tried repeatedly to get Asus2 to access the same as in Asus1
Can anyone help?

Check the network discovery settings on both PCs. In the latest Windows 11 build, you can go to Settings | Network & Internet | Advanced network settings | Advanced sharing settings.

Make sure the networks are set as private. Settings | Network & Internet. The active connection is at the top of the page with it's Public/Private property displayed. Click Properties if you need to change it.

Hello JoeP, I have tried using Private, Public & All Networks with every box ticked. I have tried a network reset a few times.
I set Asus2 exactly as Asus1 as it works perfectly. Asus2 does not even show itself.
If it wasn't for bad luck I'd have NO luck at all.

Try stopping and restarting the Function Discovery Resource Publication service

You can do this by running the services app or by typing these commands in a command window

NET STOP FDResPub
NET START FDResPub

Hello StuartR, it gave me access to Asus2 but not WDTVLive files. FDResPub is set to Manual start, is this correct?

Manual is the default
When I am near my PC I will look for the script I use to restart these services

EDITED TO ADD
I have a BAT file called FunctionDiscoveryRestart.bat on my disk, it has just these three lines

Code: Select all

NET STOP FDResPub
ping -n 2 -w 1000 16.1.1.0
NET START FDResPub
The ping just adds a two second delay between stopping and starting the service to give things time to settle down.

I then have an entry in task scheduler that runs this BAT file "At log on of any user"

Since I have been running this on all computers on my local network, I have not seen this problem again.

Hello StuartR, followed info from James from this link. https://www.elevenforum.com/t/wd-live-m ... een.12562/
It now works.
Still wondering why Asus1 worked error free but Asus2 needed tweaked.

I see that those instructions told you to enable SMB V1.0

This is disabled by default as it has a serious security flaw that allows remote attacks, like Wannabe ransomware. It's OK to enable this if you are very careful about security hygiene on the local network, but be careful.

I don't visit too many sites and have MBAM Premium so will watch it closely.
I have 2 other laptops that can access Network.
