How to turn an old Wi-Fi router into an access point

Post by Rudi »

I came across this CNet article today and found it very informative and user-friendly. I happen to have a old router and will probably (when I find the time to dabble and experiment) give this a try just for the heck of it. For any of you who are actually having issues with Wi-Fi range and signal loss, this is a great way to boost Wi-Fi into another area of your home where it is weak, and as long as you have the spare router, its totally free as you need no additional boosters or devices.

Don't forget you need a piece of ethernet between your real router and the new access point...

You are correct. A length of network cable equal to the distance between the two routers (and a few meters extra to run through the ceiling) and plugged into the LAN ports on both routers. Hopefully you can bribe an IT techie for some cable, or you'd have to buy it at a dime/meter.

The former...
Techies as easy to bribe. A bottle of Fanta, some fudge and a few packets of crisps or NikNaks generally do the trick!
