sorting out existing wiring.

Post by dasadler »

Given:
1) A 3 story residence with a couple of patch panels in a wiring closet on the ground floor that also has a cable TV input & video patch panel.
2) RJ45 data ports in each room
3) Video output in each room
4) Some rooms with a RJ45 port labeled with a phone icon.
5) No documentation
6) The landlord knows nothing about the wiring, data, voice, video, or networking.

What is the best way to sort this out and document the connectivity so we can plan the optimum placement of routers, switched, & peripherals?

Obviously I would need some sort of cable tracer - can anyone recommend one where I can simply plug it into a port in a room then check each port in the patch panel until I find a match?
