Thanks Stuart ... I just hope some 'drive by' does not download a load of porn etc using my connection and I get banged up as a result

I am pleased with the Belcom N750 router but I must have done something wrong since setting it up.
All is OK wirelessly but it will not function using a Cat5 Lan cable. My pc's state:

... and of course I have no internet access via wired connection. Both my Windows7/Vista pc's are set to 'Home' networks but for some reason the LAN reports as a Public network, unidentified. I can't find any way to make the LAN connection to the internet ... I have reset the router, run tests on the pc's and all I can find out is this:

What am I doing wrong now ... it worked fine when I did the original set up of the router and to the best of my knowledge I have not changed anything except to remove the old wireless network having a different SSID

Things I would check:

In the router setup, are the DHCP settings OK?
In the network centre, have a look at the properties of the network card and make sure it's set to get an IP address.

Apologies if you've already tried that...

Good morning John,

After a sleepless night (is that what pc problems cause :groan:) I started to think about what I had done since installing the router.
SUCCESS! When I had set up the Permitted MAC addresses I later noted one that I had not 'allowed'. "What is this", I thought. "Am I already being bugged?" So of course, I deleted it ... big mistake  it seems this one is needed and belongs to:
LAN settings.JPG
So I relisted it in the router MAC Access Control and hey, hey, it works :clapping:
(As far as I recall, I never had an additional MAC address for LAN in my older router ... or at least I never added it to the access list)

Interestingly, the LAN seems to use the Belkin 'Guest' facility and not my normal one? Any idea why this is? Since it is a wired connection I suppose it does not matter that this uses a connection with lower security eg WEP.

Thanks for your input ... no apologies needed, you set me thinking in the right direction.
Ron

The LAN does not use WEP, or WPA, those are both wireless protocols

Can I trouble the experts again with a few questions

1. All is working with my new Belkin wireless router & extender except that from time to time I find that I have to restart modem etc because the range extender looses its connection. Its not due to distance ... I have tried it within a metre of the router and have the same problem. No problems with the main router.
I have been looking at the Ralink Network Adaptor settings used for the Belkin Range Extender and found that this particular one under Power Management is set to 'Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power'. Is this likely to be the reason for disconnect?

2. What does 'Adhoc support 802.11n' mean and should it be Enabled? It is not currently enabled in either of the wireless adaptors used with router/extender.

3. And what is this Microsoft Virtual WiFi ... can't find a simple explanation on the web.

Can't help with 1 and 2, but does this help with 3?

Thanks John for links. Seems I don't need it but I think I will leave well alone and not 'disconnect' it.

Ref my ... Question 1.
'Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power' I turned this off to see what changed ... I couldn't auto connect to my wireless net with the 'range extender' computer adaptor not being allowed to be turned off. So I reset it back to 'as was' and connection now automatic. Funny thing is that when I look at the adaptor associated with the router its set to not allow the computer to turn off. Left well alone 'cause it works :innocent:

But this has not solved the issue of the range extender needing to be reset. Overnight, for example, pc's and internet radio are off, router and range extender both left on and connected as usual to the ADSL modem. This morning the extender had to be unplugged and reconnected to get it working. Could this be something to do with 'hand shaking' with the ADSL line, time out due to no activity ... what can I check? I note for example that (using WPA2 security) there are numerous changes always being 'handshaken'. Best way I can explain! I have all the various devices listed in the MAC Access Control of the router.

... Just for info, to continue this 'saga' ...

Since my last post, I have been thinking & reading a bit about the Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniport Adapter. I don't use it (to the best of my limited knowledge) so I disabled it  I also locked the router into a specific 2.4Ghz channel rather than leaving it set to 'Auto'.
Hey ... my router/range extender set up is functioning perfectly :clapping:

Is this something that others have experienced/could try.
