connect a Win 7 starter netbook to home network

Post by stuck »

I've connected a Win 7 Starter Ed netbook to my home router with an ethernet cable but I can't find it from my XPMCE desktop.

At the moment I'm staring at the netbook and reading, "You can't create your own homegroup with is edition but you can join one created by someone on your network who is running Windows 7 Home Premium..."

Umm, we've got two XP boxes & a Vista one in the house so what do I do next?

Put them all in the same workgroup, and forget about homegroups until your entire environment is Windows 7(+?).

I would say you had two main problems:
1) the horribility of netbooks
2) the limitations of Win7 StartEdn
but of course it depends on what you wish to achieve...!

I know netbooks are limited but they are portable and I'll be travelling for about 7 weeks and I want to be able to:
1) review my photos on a screen that's a bit bigger than the 2.5cm LCD on the back of the camera
2) off load my photos from the camera's card so that I'm not limited to 3500 pictures
3) check email
4) do simple surfing

I would like to connect the netbook to my home network so I can transfer some data files via a shared folder. Yes I could do the transfer using a stick but I thought it might be quicker to do it across the netwrok, especially if I used an ethernet cable rather than the wireless.

The netbook happily connects to my router (cabled or wireless) and surfs the web. It's just that I've not worked out how to let the main XPMCE PC see the netbook.

I know nothing about Win 7, this is my first prolonged 'hands on experience of it.

Mind you, I've never managed to get stuckling1's Vista laptop to show up reliably.

In your setup, you can not use a "homegroup", but you should be able to use a "WORKGROUP", for the XP and Vista.
