Imagine - remaining underground for thirteen years, then emerge, see the sunlight for four to five weeks and die...
Best wishes,
Hans

They certainly do seem to enjoy bumbling about, though. Carpe diem!

Wow, That brings back memories!
While growing up in New Jersey, we had these critters around most every summer. They must have been on consecutive annual broods, since a new batch appeared most every year. They were a sign of summer and we used to say that they started "singing" only when the temperature reached a certain high. I don't think they were so bad as to be considered a nuisance. Maybe you have many more than we did? Loved to hear them.

Now, after living in Massachusetts for a long time, we never hear them at all, at least not here on the Cape. A shame.

Yeah, I saw a map somewhere that showed where these 13 and 17 year cicadas come out... it was mostly in TN, MO, AR, AL, GA, a little of MS and a little of KY and NC. There are yearly cicadas that come out every year and I think they do spread all over the east coast of the US. The ones plastered all over TN right now are the 13 or 17 year variety. They're like flying buses!! Bzztbtbzz bzbzbz zzztt bzbzbttt!
Our cats won't even think about eating them (although they love to eat may flies). The birds, squirrels, possums and raccoons, on the other hand, are getting quite chubby with all their extra crunchy snacks! (Ack! Blech!)
That's really cool you saw them, though, in NJ!
