He was shaken and shocked but otherwise unhurt. He has apologised profusely, so much so I've had to tell him to stop! It may be expensive to fix the car but it will be valuable 'learning experience'.

My thoughts exactly. To date his driving has been quite good, this was purely down to inexperience but good judgement comes with experience and experience is what you get from bad judgement.
