It's cold outside!

Post by HansV »

I know, I know, it's nothing compared to what the Scandinavian countries are experiencing, but still...

Brrr

It's suddenly turned to Winter here in London too. I went to a funeral in the snow on Monday.

Nice photo Hans.

Meanwhile, it is cold up here but amazingly this bit of the UK is the 'warmest' bit at the moment.

Never fear though. In typical local journalistic style, the York Press has a headline today proclaiming, "Met Office reveals exact date it could snow in York and North Yorkshire next week". Interesting use of 'exact' and 'could' in the same sentence don't you think?

It's relatively realistic.

I understand the Swedish government has told Swedes to stockpile necessity in case of war. I don't know the particulars, only what I read in my morning newspaper.

Hans, is that ice on the Rhine in the pic?

Here in central Texas we are experiencing and un-seasonal temperature in the 70s (F). A front will blow in tonight dropping temps below freezing. There will be a brief warming again tomorrow, but another front arriving Sunday is predicted to drop overnight low to 12°F (-11.1°C). It will induce a 4-day period of temps that will not rise above freezing during daylight hours and will drop into the teens and twenties at night.

The saying goes, "If you don't like the weather in Texas, wait 20 minutes." It's almost literally true as I've seen temps drop from the 50s to the 20s with snowfall in less than 20 minutes.

The upside is that our Winter temps are generally quite mild with cold snaps being of brief duration. The downside is that too many of us are caught unprepared with they occur and have to be reminded to protect pets, plants, pipes, and people (our 4 Ps).

Not on the river itself, but on its flood plain.

S2487.png

On the map fragment above (1 mile E-W, 1.5 miles N-S), the upper left part is the city center of Wageningen, where I live.
The red outline indicates the part that is currently flooded, with the exception of a few ridges (such as the one with the trees in the background).
The circle marks where I took the picture this morning, standing on the "winter dyke".
