FIFA Womens World Cup - explanation sought.

Why, when a player scores a goal, do all the other members of that team try to kill their own goal-scorer?
Thanks in eager anticipation, Chris

Perhaps they mistakenly thought they were playing rugby?
Best wishes,
Hans

It happens more at the top levels I think. It’s perhaps some sort of complex mixture of jealous frustrated anger because of the perverse bonuses and pay that top scorers often get.
I seriously don’t ever try to annoy. Maybe I am just the kid that missed being told about the King’s new magic suit, :(

You're asking a question about sportsball on a forum inhabited by geeks and you expect an answer???

Even the chapter titled "How to play football" in this book:
    https://www.waterstones.com/book/how-to ... 1473680340
Doesn't answer this mysterious behaviour.

That's what I thought too. On Wednesday afternoons at High School we sometimes played Rugby. I was the hooker.

Well in this example they were Spanish players, and I don't know if I know enough about knowing Spanish to ask them
Cheers, Chris
P.S. I didn't know that the greeks were still in the game ... C

Off topic. But it's interesting to see the interest here in Australia.

We're waiting for Australia to play England in the semi final - and to be honest, I can't see Australia winning.

But the interest is because Australia have progressed further than they have in any world cup match, male or female.

And it's also because women's sport has gained far more attention than it has before. Of course, having come this far, there's even more attention than before. But soccer as a sport has had an increasing following. When my daughters started playing 25 years ago, they initially had to play in a mixed team before a girls league was formed. And having the event hosted in Australia and New Zealand has further increased the interest. It means matches are played during prime time TV.

However, the men's team is still paid vastly more than the women's team.

It's also not-fascinating to see the women's world cup dominate every online newspaper that I have visited over the past two weeks, although coverage in the Canadian Press seems to have dropped off since the end of July

The ABC news has almost become "The Journal of Womens Soccer". And rightly so.
Cheers, Chris

Women's football is so much more watchable than the men. The girls play a proper game. The men play like 70s wrestlers used to fight!

Congratulations to England - Australia was outplayed.

The match had the highest ever Australian audience recorded since the current measuring system began in 2001, and the most streamed event in Australia ever.

Yet broadcasting rights were picked up comparitively cheaply, as it wasn't thought that women's sport would raise an audience.

Sport is something about which commentators get frenetically excited.
