But contractors contract things...
Except if my son is to be believed, the default operation of a contractor is to lengthen the project they are involved with. He spends a lot of time each work day chasing up contractors to try to mitigate this problem.

Ah!
What your son needs is a Consultant to recommend a group which will prepare an Analysis of the Situation, perhaps with a recommendation of a suitable firm to be hired.
You're welcome!

A dear friend of my parents (she turned 101 last week) used to gift me books she had read. Among them, several by Miles Kington. I enjoyed them very much.
Best wishes,
Hans

This brave little soul watches me as I trundle compost from one end of the yard to the other.
Or at least, as I will trundle, once this is posted.

... and speaking of complaints ...

What's the statute of limitations on complaints about the weather on Eileen's Lounge?
In particular, when can I start complaining that it is too hot, and, on Thursday, too humid?
Thanks in humility

We've been reading of extreme heat conditions in many parts of the US, and in Europe.

If it helps you to cool down, in the Lounge, we're all big fans.

Actually, this Summer has been a little less severe here than it was last year . . . fewer days above 100° F. We are in a drought. Our local water supply reservoir is 14 feet below full. It is a large flood control lake built about 75 years ago and covers parts of 2 counties.

We haven't had restrictions yet, but they are anticipated. Surprisingly, relative humidity has remained higher than normal later in the season than is usual; but it is not very high in comparison to other areas of Texas. For example, our rh has been in the 30-40% range for the last few days. Normally we would it expect it to be below 30%. We have had no measurable rainfall for about 8-9 weeks; however, there are some small geographic areas that have received infrequent showers. We tend to complain about rh when it stays above 35%.

By now you know that Spring didn't arrive at all this year. July 9th we turned our heaters back on; July 19th we broke the Bonavista high temperature record of 1959. One week is was too cold and wet to spend time in the yard. The week after that it was too hot.
A natural consequence of this is that the yard work didn't get done.
However, there is good news.

One of the gooseberry bushes I planted last year has borne fruit.
Back I go to the cooking forum to post my attempt at baking a gooseberry pie with only one gooseberry.
I'd bottle it if only I had a small enough jar ...
Cheers, Chris
