We over here have something called 'Marmite', is this similar or did I just blaspheme?
Hi LineLaline. I am not sure where "over here" is. Since I live on a small island about the size of Tasmania, everywhere other than where I am is "over there".
Roughly like "Marrmite" in the United Kingdom.
For a quick (and cheap'n'nasty) approximation, try sucking on an OXO cube of beef extract. Such a cube is basically a one-centimetre cube of salt with a shade of beef to hold it together :hairout:
Cheers, Chris

Not quite blasphemy, but having consumed both Marmite and Vegemite, I contend that Vegemite has a stronger (?more pungent) flavour. Perhaps an acquired taste? And it does go well with raw onion. Am yet to attempt that with Marmite, but why not try it!
Perhaps we could all invade Chris' sanctuary armed with both contenders, and run a well-controlled comparative experiment. We will need an impartial judge..... I doubt that such an individual exists.

They are both yeast extracts. Vegemite is more concentrated, and so less easy to spread, with a more intensive flavour.

At one stage, Vegemite was called Parwill. It's slogan was Marmite but Parwill.

There are currently a number of Vegemite products. There are Vegemite hot cross buns - which caused controversy because they, and the non flavoured versions, became available on Boxing Day. There are Vegemite bread scrolls, roast chicken and baked beans. There have been Vegemite flavoured pies, crisps (chips), chocolate and sausages.

There's even a recipe for Vegemite icy poles (or popsicles)

Out west I was taught to spread in a three-step process:-
(1) Dip the knife into the jar to take on a load of Vegemite
(2) Spread the gob of Vegemite evenly across the buttered bread
(3) Using the same knife, scrape off from the bread as much Vegemite as you can, returning this excess to the jar

Cheers, Chris

Mission completed- best before date varied from August 2023 to November 2023 depending on jar size.
However Aussies would be likely to ignore the date and assume this stuff is eternal. As one wit commented: 'Two things will outlast humanity: 1. Micro plastics 2. Vegemite.'

Thank you Amelia.
Perhaps there is printed a blanket "one year from today" as the jar is filled.
As you pointed out "I found a jar in the frig (as one does) but the expiry date had worn off,", so an Expiry date on the Best Use Before date would seem to be in order.
Next time I am at Flinders Street station I will drop off that key as promised.
Cheers, Chris

Here's a little known fact: The master recording for that song was recorded on one of those cylindrical doo-dads made from chilled Vegemite,

Hint for Amelia: based on Chris' comment it should arrive in 9 days. That was the length of time from date of Vegemite order at Blighty’s in Orangeville Ontario to delivery at 60 Canon Bayley Road in Bonavista. I trust this will supply you with some hope on the arrival date of the “key”
Regards,
Bob

I should add that if you live in Montreal, every parcel sits in the sorting warehouse for a minimum of seven days, so if you are in a hurry, you would be well-advised to swing by there; cut a week off delivery!

Point well taken Chris- I am never sure whether these labels are "expiry" or "best before." So to save confusion, I vote that all food items have an expiry date for the best before date, as you suggested.
I must train my family not to place empty jars in the frig- impossible to tell whether a jar of Vegemite is empty without removing the lid.
As delivery by Australia Post can take a week from one suburb to the next (it is easier and faster to jump in the car and hand deliver post), I imagine that an international delivery to Brisbane Airport may take several months to reach the Gold Coast- but I look forward to receiving the key by the end of 2023- then the fun begins.............

"Marmite" - evokes thoughts of a very powerful explosive.
