a day at the seaside

Specifically at Flamborough Head.

Where we saw a drinking dinosaur:

and were given a seal of approval:

That's a good sharp seal image. He appears to be looking straight at you. How far away was he?

How far away was he?
I think he was within a whisker of touching it.

I was stood at the shore line, trying not to get wet feet as the tide was coming in. I'm not a very good judge of distance across open water but I'd guess the seals were between 100 m and 200 m out in the bay. This shot is a heavy crop from the original, giving an effective (35 mm equivalent) focal length of around 1000.

Well spotted, that young man!
Not many people know that unlike fish, which have only fingers, seals not only have thumbs, but have opposable thumbs, which means that they (seals) can grasp a long, thin writing implement, such as a pencil or a pen, and that means that seals can write.

Which skill gave rise to a huge import/export business across the English Channel with especially-constructed boats dedicated solely to the ferrying of ink, for the seals, between the UK and The Rest Of The World.

Oh! I feared that the ink was made from seals (like squid ink)... :phew:

That was, I think, Miles Kington's observation to Ala Coren on the cross-channel "Punch" excursion, back when Coren was editor of Punch.
I'd post an image of the text, except that those books are cartoned and blocking up the front corridor while my study is being Windowed!
(Three down, fourteen to go)

I say "Three down, fourteen to go" because the third window is installed. There is a view through the replaced window in the study through the new window in the study looking towards the compost heap, which meant that yesterday I could work at the compost bins and keep an eye on the two lads through the window they inserted on Friday as they were working on Monday's window.
The two study windows are sealed (he wrote, struggling to stay on-topic), but the interior box and trim and six-inch-wide sills are yet to be installed.
I now have three 6'x4' windows through which I cannot see stars at night on account of the neighbor's light pollution.
Cheers, Chris
