It's some sort of cornflower. It was growing wild by the side of the road but as it's a purple colour and not the traditional blue of cornflower, I think it has naturalised from someone's garden.

:thumbup: Yes, that's it and Wikipedia is correct when says of it:
Greater knapweed is found growing in dry grasslands, hedgerows and cliffs on lime-rich soil...
It was growing in the hedgerow not far from the bottom of the chalk face in this shot.
