I had never heard of barrack as a verb, but its meaning was immediately clear from the context.
Best wishes,
Hans

Perhaps you should explain that Barrack is an Australianism for supporting a team, and is not a misspelled reference to a former president, nor is it a soldier's quarters.
Perhaps I should explain that "Barrack" could not possibly be a misspelled reference to a former president, since my Dad stopped barracking (and simultaneously denigrating) anyone at all in 1996, or thereabouts.

The verb to barrack is used here in the UK to mean saying something negative about a person, as in the first sentence of this OED definition. I have never come across it used with 'for' to mean supporting.

In the UK "barracking" has the meaning of "heckling".

The Cambridge English Dictionary says:
Loud shouting by someone who disagrees with a person who is speaking.
Example: She could not make herself heard above the constant barracking.

PS I have just noticed that Stuart has said something similar, and earlier!
Serves me right for not coming back to a thread for a couple of hours...

I think that this goes both ways.
Miles Kington or Alan Coren once wrote a piece about "rain", saying, "It is the only thing guaranteed to make batsmen run", and yet for all their/his disparaging remark, i suspect they/he was really wishing that the English side would win.

I suspect the piece to which you refer is this one - see Force 3...
Raindrops falling together now, but still invisibly, like the spray which drifts off the fountain with the wind behind. Known as ‘fine rain’. Ignored by all sportsmen except Test cricketers, who dash for cover.

Wrong!
The URL alone, let alone the entire Letter To My Dog, not to mention the books for sale and the fact that both of my credit cards are paid off, is reason enough for me to stop reading your posts.
I can see from the URL that I won't be able to turn off my bedside light until 9:30 tonight, and I go to bed at SEVEN!

On top of that your incorrect answer has caused me to read through my entire collection of Corens, and then most of the way through my Kington works of literature in order to set the record straight. Now I shall not have time to pull daffodils from the first driveway's second bed before it is time to light the barbecue.

Frankly I blame it all on PJ's need for re-assurance ...

This is from page 179 of my paperback copy of "Moreover Too", soon to be a two-volume set - the binding failing, again, between pages 163 and 163.

You could restrict yourself to the shorter pieces, for example. That won't take long.
Le Belle Dame Sans Merci, par Jean Keats

‘Au revoir!’ dit la belle dame.
‘Au revoir?’ dit-il. ‘C’est tout, au revoir?’
‘Sorry,’ dit la belle dame, blushing. ‘Au revoir, et merci.’

As Hans said, sort of, never heard of (that I can remember), but very much clear from the context.

Not to worry, Argus; we are still all on-topic.
After all, what would any Cambridge scholar know about Aussie Rules as she is played in front of 100,000 rabid fans at the semi-finals in Melbourne?
Cheers

Two worthy teams, but my hopes were that England would win, it's about time they do (although a rather young team it is said).
