Calling all meteorologists
The intermittent rain-radar at Holyrood has been resolved by having no rain radar at Holyrood until September 20 this year. So I am looking for a predictor of weather. I found wind and tides
Yesterday was similar to today-and-tomorrow (above) in that the wind is shown blowing from the south-west while the waves are coming from the north-east.
I can understand that a strong north-easterly can set up waves that persist for, say, 24 hours, but I can't reconcile a contrary sense for Monday, followed by a prediction of a contrary sense for another two days (Tuesday, Wednesday).
I would have thought that by Wednesday we would be predicting that Sunday(?)'s strong north-easterlies effect would have died out to be replaced by south-westerly waves.
I note that wave-height is fairly consistent, too. It appears to be predicted not to weaken.
(later) I am aware of the long-lasting effects of winds, for example sahara dust storms reaching across the Atlantic ocean.
Thanks
Chris

Re: Calling all meteorologists
The wave direction appears to be fairly independent of the wind direction. Perhaps the form of the coast line is more influential in Bonavista than the direction of the wind?
(I looked up a place on the Dutch coast - wave direction roughly followed wind direction there. And Wageningen, not being on the coast, has no wave direction at all...)

Re: Calling all meteorologists
And superbly informative.
I ***love*** watching those kite-tails stream up from the south-west.
I could sit (indoors) and watch it all day if the birds weren't calling me back out to the garden.
Thanks Ken.
An EXCELLENT link.

P.S. This is so good that I have bookmarked it to my main Toolbar instead of an auxiliary toolbar.

If I remember correctly it was Rudi who first mentioned that site. Shortness of life prevents me from searching The Lounge to find it.

Re: Calling all meteorologists
Good fun, yes, but near-critical when you have three truckloads of grass clippings to be barrowed to the top end of the back-forty! My copy of Ventusky has shifted its attitude. (but see a solution at this post)
I swear that when I started the Bonavista peninsula (outlined by me in purple here) was centre-screen. Now it is slinking off the top-right corner of the screen.
I have tried:-
(1) Dragging the map to centre-screen and exiting Ventusky/Firefox to see if the setting held; it did not
(2) Re-setting my location to "Bonavista". no luck.
(3) Looking for an add-0n/extension to delete, but of course there is none.
(4) Cleaning obvious cookies (none that I could see)
(5) Searching the registry (two entries, both for cookies)
(6) Allowing Ventusky to use My Location
I would appreciate any other suggestions to bring Bonavista back to where it belongs - centre-stage!
Thanks
Chris

Try moving to Toronto...ChrisGreaves wrote: ↑17 Aug 2020, 09:41I would appreciate any other suggestions to bring Bonavista back to where it belongs - centre-stage!
But seriously: if you start Google Maps or Bing Maps, what is the map centred on?
Best wishes,
Hans

Re: Calling all meteorologists
Hello Hans.
Google Maps is centred on part of Bonavista. The search/location bar (near top left) is primed with "Bonavista, NL", the red dart is, I suppose, Google's definition of the Downtown Cores, and I have outlined my humble abode in purple.
I loaded the map above from a bookmark in Firefox. Properties = https://www.google.ca/maps/place/Bonavi ... 53.1118249
Instead of the bookmarked item I issue a Google search for - GoogleMaps - then click on the first result, shown above. I have circled my home. I suspect that in this case Google maps has accessed "My Location".
This issue is not critical; I wondered whether I had missed a setting in Ventusky.
Cheers
Chris

Re: Calling all meteorologists
What happens if you just start Google Maps without an explicit search for Bonavista?

Re: Calling all meteorologists
Hello again Hans!
That was my second foray shown above (in Map View, not the Satellite view), but just to confirm:-
(1) I exited FireFox
(2) Ran CCleaner and did a custom clean
(3) Checked that E:\Cache\ had disappeared
(4) Reloaded FireFox
(5) Keyed in “Google Maps” w/o quotes in the URL box (Ctrl-L)
(6) Clicked on the leading result which took me to
(7) https://www.google.com/maps/@48.6535815,-53.1120382,14z with the result shown in the second image above.
(8) RegEdit reported no presence of “48.6535815” in keys, values or data
Cheers
Chris

Re: Calling all meteorologists
OK, thanks. So your IP address correctly locates you in Bonavista. I was wondering whether that was off, but it isn't...
Best wishes,
Hans

Do it the old fashion way, open the front door and look at the sky down the road.

That might be a problem in Bonavista...

Re: Calling all meteorologists
No "might" about it: It will be, and for me, has been, a problem even in a small part of Bonavista!

Re: Calling all meteorologists
You're kidding, right?
Last week even ***I*** felt the heat.
The next day I and my neighbours contemplated turning our heaters on.
At the end of a hot day, I light my little camp-fire barbecue at 530, and by 6pm I am sitting outside in a light shower contemplating microwaving the sausages before the power goes out ...
One of the reasons for centering myself in Ventusky is that we never know from which quarter we are going to be hit.
It's not like living in, say, Oklahoma where at least you know where the next tornado will come from (Oklahoma), or living in Toronto where you know that if it is bad, it will "sweep up the Ohio Valley and reach here at peak-hour tomorrow morning"

I came across this one recently... so far it's been fairly accurate. I have it set to Houten in the Netherlands where I live. I'm sure it could be set at least to Wageningen!!

Re: Calling all meteorologists
I have found a manual fix that involves little more finesse than a sledge-hammer:
I noticed that when I used my "Ventusky" bookmark the URL stated "https://www.ventusky.com/?p=44.7;-64.4;5&l=rain-3h" but that when I used the search box for "Bonavista" the search box reported "https://www.ventusky.com/?p=48.38;-53.06", so I made a second bookmark "Ventusky2" and tweaked it to one-hour intervals, thus "https://www.ventusky.com/?p=48.38;-53.06&l=rain-1h" I am now centered AND see rain at one-hour intervals instead of 3-hour accumulations.
I suspect that initially I had
(1) used the search box to search for Bonavista
(2) played around dragging the map and finally
(3) saved the url as the bookmark "Ventusky" after Ventusky had updated the lat/long.
Phew! My little world is once again centred on me ...
Cheers
Chris
