What shrub is that? (Solved!)
Solved! here.
I seek help in identifying this shrub.
A complete set of photos can be seen at http://www.chrisgreaves.com/WhatShrubIsThat/WhatShrubIsThat.htm
The shrub - in the driveway of the "my" apartment building - has grown to about eight feet high.
It is difficult to see in the main photos because it blends into the background of the tree behind it.
The pods, looking a bit like a wild rose hip - are about 1.5 centimeters diameter, just over half an inch.
I can't recall seeing flowers on the shrub, but I suppose it must have flowered!
(later: I just thought to check Google Maps Street view at "M9C 2A6" in Canada and I can see white blossoms there!)
No major life-shaping decisions hang on this; I plan to plant the pods to see if I can raise four shrubs from them, and if i succeed would like to have them labeled.

I can't tell from the larger photo -- is the leaf simple or compound? Does it attach directly to the branch or does it appear in a group of 3-5 other leaflets with the group attached to the branch?

Ooooh! Don't go all technical on me (grin!)Samantha wrote:Does it attach directly to the branch or does it appear in a group of 3-5 other leaflets with the group attached to the branch?
I have updated the web page with two more full-size photos taken this morning.
It's a twiggy sort of bush, but that may be because it is crowded out and possibly hacked by various superintendents over the years.
Here's a stripped-down version of one of the two new photos:

Re: What shrub is that?
It looks like some kind of viburnum - I'd almost say maple-leaf viburnum, but that has dark blue to purple berries instead of orange ones.
Best wishes,
Hans

Yabbut (speaking like a true Canadian) when I look up Wiki although the blossoms are white, I see things with berries, whereas my shrub is definitely a hip-like fruit.HansV wrote:It looks like some kind of viburnum - I'd almost say maple-leaf viburnum, but that has dark blue to purple berries instead of orange ones.
I should pay more attention in the spring I guess ...
I have a car next week; maybe I'll take a leaf and fruit to Plant World.

I'm with Leif - looks like a rose of some kind - there are a number of thornless (or very few thorns) rambling and climbing roses. Chris, can you get us a pic of the flowers?

Not until next spring, I'm afraid!Goshute wrote:... can you get us a pic of the flowers?
Here is a screenshot from Google maps ("M9C 2A6") street view.
Not very good, and zooming in doesn't help.

Re: What shrub is that?
OK, so it probably is a rose. But the dog rose, which is the one best know for rose hips, has the round(ish) leaves typical of roses, whereas your shrub appears to have lobed leaves...ChrisGreaves wrote:... whereas my shrub is definitely a hip-like fruit.

Hans, If you are trying to lure me into hijacking my own thread with a rotten pun about el lobo ....HansV wrote:But the dog rose ... whereas your shrub appears to have lobed leaves...
I think I'll wait until plant World and then report back.
Thanks to all so far.

Re: What shrub is that?
My guess is a hawthorn variety which we have here. Check this out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crataegus_sanguinea Crataegus sanguinea (common names Redhaw Hawthorn or Siberian hawthorn
My mother loved these trees and used to make jelly from the berries--none of us liked it because it wasn't strawberry, but it's an acquired taste I suppose for children.

If you check out "Pome" you'll find this description http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pome
In botany, a pome (after the Latin word for fruit: pÅmum) is a type of fruit produced by flowering plants in the subfamily Maloideae of the family Rosaceae.
That would be suggestive of why the fruit resembles rose hips.

This makes sense.
Your attached image is pretty well what I see on my desk (or at least, did see, until the leaves shriveled up).
Thanks Hey Jude.

:thumbup:I think you nailed it, Jude, and it would certainly handle those chilly Canadian winters. The Bride is Canadian and probably would have figured it out, but I cant lure her to Eileen's.Hey Jude wrote:My guess is a hawthorn variety which we have here. Re: What shrub is that?
We have pretty harsh winters here in NW Ohio too. We border Lake Erie to the East and Lake Michigan is 2 1/2 hours due West. We had them as well when we lived in Rhode Island as kids, that's what triggered my memory :-)
I remember pricking our fingers on those barbs *OUCH* so careful Chris.

Re: What shrub is that?
The nice lady at Plant World in Toronto identified it as a crab-apple. It's shrub-like appearance can be ascribed to lack of proper maintenance etc.ChrisGreaves wrote:I seek help in identifying this shrub.
My guess is that it sprang from a crab-apple dropped by a child several years ago. It's position between a larger tree and the fence would have preserved it from the nosy brats who ride power mowers here once a week ...
Thanks for all the suggestions.
