Ah, the alphorn...

And how about the shofar from the Old Testament?

A couple of years ago we were on holiday in Austria, one evening in the town there was a festival and inevitably alphorns featured. When they'd finished playing, the crowd were invited to have a go so my eldest stepped forward and played a simple arpeggio, much to the amazement of the band :whisper: we didn't let on that he can play the trumpet :fanfare:

In Ystad it is sounded each hour by a watchman to indicate that all is well.
Won't get blown that often then if the TV series Wallander' is anything to go by.

Oh.
Nowadays we use SMS, texting, for that, I guess. Beep-beep, beep-beep.
Much easier than trying to recognise all those horn messages; wuuuuaaaee-wuuae-wuaae. "Wait a minute, was that the 'there's a wolf in town'-message or was it the last call for the council’s meeting today, or, er? :hmmn:

True, that's why I've never visited the area.
Or as in Midsomer county (i.e. a.k.a. Bucks, Hertfordshire and surrounding area  )? :spook:

I think it's done between 21:15 and 01:00(!), every fifteen minute. Wuuuuaaaaaeeeeee...

(The one used in Ystad, is apparently another type, it’s made of copper.)

If you have watched the football (soccer) World Cup this year, you KNOW that the vuvuzelas will destroy your hear(ing)!

My apologies Chris, but it was a wicked attempt at a pun. Perhaps I should have said hear(t) so even those in 'the east' (normally anything east of the Rocky Mountains) would understand.

Here, have a :chocciebar: and just relax. Everything is going to be just fine ...

Thanks, saves me going across the street in peak-hour traffic ...

CHOCOLATE PATE

4 oz. semi sweet chocolate (I use the Bakers squares)
½ cup butter

4 egg yolks
½ cup white sugar
2/3 cup unsweetened cocoa
1 cup whipping cream (whipped)

1) Melt chocolate and butter in microwave (approximately 2-3 minutes)
2) Add sugar and stir
3) Add cocoa and stir
4) Add egg yolks – one and a time – stir after each one
5) Fold in whipped cream
6) Whip everything with electric mixer for 1-2 minutes
7) Line loaf pan with plastic wrap and pour mixture into pan – Refrigerate for at least 6 hours

Serve with any of the following: icing sugar sprinkled over top
Raspberry sauce
Whip Cream and orange segments
Strawberries etc.
