Jezza Bear is in a foul mood, news has just come through that major cuts are happening throughout the world of finance and government and has decided to take control of his finances but cannot balance his books.

Mrs J allows JB £100 pocket money a month to spend on Kitchen Table Science projects and running shoes. Mrs J has requested that his end of month "accounts" be sent to her to see if he has overspent...which he often does!

As requested by Mrs J he has sent a balance sheet of his money spent and the balance but cannot get it to balance as there appears to be a missing £1.

Loungers, can you assist J with his accounting issue please, he has sent me his T account below?

Adding the balance amounts doesn't make sense, so there is no contradiction.

Example 1: JB buys new running shoes and spends his £100 in one go:
Money out = £100, Balance = £0.
Total money out = £100, sum of all balance amounts = £0.

Example 2: JB spends his money on 100 cups of tea at £1 each.

Money out = £1, Balance = £99.
Money out = £1, Balance = £98.
...
Money out = £1, Balance = £0.
Total money out = £100, sum of all balance amounts is 100 * £99/ 2 = £4950.
